Chester, a city once flourished with smokestack industries, has left behind many families when the big companies departed some time ago. Although the city has regained a lot it's economical status, crime has been a heavy part of daily life due to economic hardships. With one of the highest per capita murder rates in the country, people in the city have a 1 in 37 chance of being a victim of a violent crime.
TAJEE SHERMAN, a music artist known as "SHERM," is not about to be a statistic added to this crime rate. He uses music to combat a criminal lifestyle and has been breaking barriers that would otherwise hold him back.
At age 23, SHERM is the youngest of his parents children and has been living in Chester since birth. As a lot of talented artists, since the age of 9, he has been experimenting with rap music, crafting his art and now since 2016, SHERM has decided to pursue a music career.
We had a chance to interview SHERM to find out who he is.
JANNY SHMANNY - Is there anyone in your city that may have influenced your rap career ?
SHERM - As far as influence from my city, my producer Slice. There's not really a lot of rap names here.
JS - How did you get started in the business?
S - I used to rap on the block with my homies and that motivated us to take our talents to the studio.
JS - How would you describe your style?
S - Realistic and energetic. I feel like I give off that crazy vibe with real music and that's a crazy combination.
JS - Are you inspired by other artists?
S - Industry wise? Wayne, Kodak, you know, most of the big names, but I like underground more.
JS - Can you tell us about any projects you got going on or any future plans?
S - I'm working on my second project, but first official mixtape. Trying to link with a lot of unheard talent.
JS - How do you plan on moving forward from here, now that you are at this small, yet big moment in your career?
S - I can only keep moving forward if I really want to succeed. I have to acknowledge that this is only a small accomplishment.
JS - What are your views about giving back to your community?
S - I could never forget where I came from, no matter how far I make it. When I didn't have it, nobody was there, so I couldn't possibly see my people down in that manner.
