Video after the break....

Detroit bred emcee I.P, better known as “Ill Poet” represents his “inner peace” through his smooth, conscious, and verbal expression of his perception of reality. Traveling all the way from Detroit, Michigan to Champaign, IL to demonstrate his lyrical abilities in the urban radio station’s first successful attempt at highlighting a very important element of Hip Hop: Cyphering.
After winning the Cypher by both online votes and through cloud participation WBML Radio caught up with I.P for an interview:

Thisis50: How does it feel to be the winner of WBML Radio’s first cypher?
IP: I appreciate the opportunity, and I am very honored. Honestly, I was shocked because the competition was dope. The people showed me loved so I fed em what they wanted.

Thisis50: What makes you want to rap? When did you get started?
IP:I been spitting bars here and there since high school, but to me it got old after a while. At the end of the day, it’s not just spotting bars, to me it’s like giving fruit to my people, and giving them what they need to hear as opposed to sweet lines. I see us emcees as leaders and I am doing it for my city Detroit.

Thisis50:Describe yourself as an artist? Throughout the cypher you brought an entire different energy it was more so of a message.
IP:I named myself IP because it took me a long time to understand what true inner peace was and when I found it I started delivering it.

Thisis50: How did you become a part of this cypher?
IP:The station reached out to me because they heard some of my music virally and I am cool with some of the personalities here and they reached out to me.

Thisis50:How do you feel about rapping over beats that you have never heard?
IP:It is what it is, this is what we do, we practice over all types of beats.

Thisis50: What do you feel about the production?
IP: Shoutout to GiftXCurse, Rob Bates, and NOSPEAKERZ, they are all extremely talented and brought a lot of unique energy to the cypher.

Thisis50: What makes you unique as an artist?
IP:I just do me, I feel like God gave me a gift and I have to use it as a message.

Thisis50: You speak about God giving you a gift, what is your message and how do you use it?
IP: I absorb what is given to me and what motivate me is the kids. They are our future and they absorb everything. Soaking them up with positivity and truth will allow them to give it off.

Thisis50: What are your long-term goals?
IP: I want to be one of the heads of the industry, and ultimately want to be an enabler for my family, and for the love of my people.

Thisis50: You talk a lot about family and God; where does that come from and can you say they are your motivation?
IP: No doubt, my mom is a Christian woman, took me to church 5 times a week and it groomed my spirituality. I had to go through a lot of mistakes both my family, and mine and to be able to find myself and capture that one on one relationship with God

Thisis50: What do you hope to accomplish with music?
IP: My music is for the world. I have a great team and I just want the world to hear me and my teams progressively become and eat like kings and queens both literally and metaphorically. I am currently working on my mixtape, which is called “The Gift” and all I have been given through my journey to inner peace.

Thisis50: Who inspires you as an artist?
IP: People inspire me in general. I love all types of people and all types of passion and stories that they hold. People just doing them inspire me, and even when people do wrong, I get inspired by their journey to becoming right by their own means for the better. It’s a beautiful thing.

Thisis50: What artists would you want to meet and work with?
IP: Sade, first and foremost she is beautiful. Lauryn Hill, Andre 3000, Outkast, 50 of course, and Eminem because he is from home and he is a motivation

Thisis50: How do you feel about this kind of exposure and being a part of Thisis50.COM?
IP: It is a blessing and I look forward to the response and feedback from the exposure. I am honored for this position and I really hope that the world responds well to my gift.

Thisis50: What other talents to do you have?
IP: I also play the piano and of course write. Oh and I talk good on the phone, my gift for the ladies of course haha.

Thisis50: What was the most rewarding part of this experience?
IP: The cypher as a whole was just dope. My favorite part of the cypher of course was the crowd reaction.

Thisis50: Any last words and/or shout outs?
IP: Shoutout to WBML Radio for having me. I have to give a shout out to the entire GrindFace movement we started back at home. My brothers P8tience, Jay Beretta, A.Dot, Goddi, Will, Rich, NOSPEAKERZ for holding me down, and everyone back at the D. Special thank you to twitter and the audience for holding me down and crowing me the champ of WBML Radio’s first cypher
