It was a good old fashioned brawl between Wanderlei Silva and Brian Stann Saturday at UFC on Fuel TV 8. The fight brought back memories of Silva's glory days when he dominated the Pride Fighting Championships.

In just under 2 rounds, Silva and Stan thew 200 strikes, according to fightmetric.com. Silva landed 49 of his 97 attempts; Stann hit on 64 of his 103 attempts in front of an enthusiastic crowd at Saitama Super Arena in Saitama, Japan.

There were no submission attempts by either fighter.

The end came at 4:08 of the second round when "The Axe Murderer" landed a devastating right hook, followed by a left hook that knocked the "All American" to the canvas. Silva quickly pounced on his downed opponent, landing several more punches before the referee called a halt to the fight.

Silva was ecstatic after the win which raised his record to 35-12 and 1 draw.

He’s a tough guy,” Silva told Fuel TV. “He put in a great performance. It’s the kind of fight I love to do. We’re there to fight. I am not there to run. I like to fight like that. Thanks a lot to Brian Stann for fighting me. It was a great show for the fans.

With the loss Stann fell to 12-6.

Wanderlei has always been one of my favorite fighters ever,” Stann said. “He’s one of the fighters that impressed me and made me want to get into the sport. I’m very proud to be part of his career. As much as this hurts right now, and my heart is broken, I’m proud I put my name on the line.”

In the co-main event Mark Hunt broke Stefan Struve’s jaw with a vicious left hook in the third round. Struve hit the canvas hard and was visibly dazed. Referee Herb Dean took a look at the 7 foot tall Struve and determined he was unable to continue.

My timing was off and I couldn’t put things together, but I was glad to take the win,” said Hunt, who stands just 5-foot-10. “It’s hard to fight a guy like Struve. He’s a big kid."

@SMP: first off everyone is entitled to a personal preference which combat sport they enjoy viewing. My opinion in relation to your comments regarding boxing vs. MMA fighters. The perspective that i.m speaking from is from that as a competitor in both MMA and Boxing(i.ve competed in pro MMA and have boxed since I was 14 including several regional styles of boxing.) Boxing and MMA are two similar combat sports with key differences. As an MMA athlete, I have trained in a variety of martial arts which include boxing(yes boxing IS a martial art.). The reason this is necessary is because no traditional fighting art is totally complete by itself. being a sucessful MMA fighter requires a Jacc of all trades, master at finishing skillset. Being that MMA contains the elements of all "ranges"of unarmed combat, mma fighters depending on their learning aptitude can be sucessful in boxing if they specialize their training. This is not to say boxers cannot do the same in mma, it would potentially be slightly more difficult do to the sheer amount oc bodily weapons and stratigies involved simultaneously. i.e.: NFL player playing Aussie rules football.
Just some documented FACTS of safety, longevity of fighters in both sports. Under the unified MMA rules requiring 4Oz gloves, and 6 ft. or less of hand taping(no tape on the knuccles): due to the fact the crown of the skull is harder than the hand, lighter/smaller gloves and the absence of tape on the knuccles requires that a fighter has no choice but to be more Accurate with punching AND defence against strikes both standing and on the ground. The advantage to fighter safty is that if a punch connects correctly, he/she would be k.o..d swiftly. This means taking less punches to the head per fight, from a less padded/taped fist. Boxing rules allows for about 9ft of tape on the fist including the knuccles that is covered in more padding for a fight consisting of many more rounds. This creates the perfect conditions forpermanant brain damage/bleeding in the brain. i.e. having a pillow fight with cinderbloccs in the pillows. Having padding on the cinderblocc means more strikes to k.o. = more tramatic impact prior to k.o. For longerduration of time. Boxing wraping/gloves protects the puncers hand more than the puncee head, MMA protects the punchee head more than the punchers hand and allows for betfer gripping enhancing finishing capabilities. I my eyes boxing and mma aren't in competition I see them both as $$$$$$. I had a severe leg injury last year and focused on my boxing/52 AND got my boxing commission fighter i.d. Which allows me to fight pro boxing. All I need is a contract with a promoter that includes fiances for my training, and some endorsements to cover living expenses(NYC is expensive to live everthing that I just said is FIRSTHAND FACT. Checc out both my mma/muay Thai and boxing fight footage on YouTube. Here's some links:

@SMP again what are u talking about. If your talking about getting hit in the head so many times, think about boxing training camps, those guys take a real serious beating on a daily basis. I've heard of stories of Roger Mayweather beating the crap out of someone jus for talking sh*t in the camp. ALSO, you say your a fan of the HW in boxing, ARE YOU SERIOUS? The Klitschko brothers, those guys are so f'n boiring all they do is jab, jab, hold, jab jab, and more hold. Should not compare MMA and Boxing, 2 completely different sport, if u did, why not compare K1, wrestling and BJJ tournaments, tae-kwon do, etc...

20 boxers vs 20 UFC? Boxers would win in UFC tactics? SMP you really talk out your f****** a** you b**** looser! You don't know what it takes to go raw dog in a fight "anything goes" in a real battle. The first boxers used to sit on large boulders side to side, striking one another till the Some one fell or got knocked the f*** out. They started using leather wraps to make pain more unsuitable to comfort. Total apposite of what boxing is today. F*** off fruit boy, keep your feminine thoughts to yourself. UFC all day!

Stann, that was one of the worst game plans I've ever seen. Stand and trade haymakers with W.Silva??? That's his style! I hope you learned your lesson.
