Texas Board Of Education Declare Hip Hop Is Not A Cultural Movement

Members of the Texas State Board of Education gave preliminary approval Friday to remove significant areas of curriculum from civil rights and global politics and replace them with conservative historic figures and beliefs. Courses that would be affected by these changes include social studies, history and economics.

One of the subjects debated amongst the lawyers, dentists and publishers, who make up the board, was whether or not Hip Hop should be taught as a cultural movement. According to the Huffington Post, right wing members voted that Hip Hop should be deleted as a requirement and that students should not be taught about its cultural impact across not only the United States, but the world.

Conservatives also approved to have a sociological focus on institutional racism and its presence in American society banned from the books, as well as removing important references of Latino and Hispanic figures throughout history.

The Texas State Board of Education approved of the new expectations with a 10-5 vote, and a final decision is expected to be made in May, but not before holding an open forum where the public can produce additional arguments and even possibly, different amendments to stop some of the changes from being implemented.

If the amendments are approved, the changes to the content will affect learning nationwide because most school textbooks are published in Texas and would be taught to millions of students for the next 10 years.

Okay first off some of you are just here just to stir retarded arguments. find something else productive to do with your life. Second, the whole president thing about race and what he has done and what not....mute argument to argue over....honestly a president is just a spokesperson/ piece..for a LARGER political system (go review your 6TH grade social studies all the way to which ever grade you stopped at text books or learned independently), so as far as accomplishments learn the system get a real understanding and move on.Third, the purpose of HISTORY books is to explain all things that have led to the current culture or mindset or civilization...whatever you'd like to call it today.....Removing info sure as hell doesn't help bring a realization of these things at all....more or less limits or decreases it. Fourth, There removing more than just HIP HOP from the records but again most of you will look only at what YOU yourself take interest in so as expected some of you wont care of some of the things they remove and many of you won’t get the opportunity to EXPAND your own knowledge through exposure. The history books make small references to hip hop as is not holding a dissertation on them just a explanation of its existence (independent courses aside.). Also to remove hip hop which if you’d like to compare is like a mini renaissance of art and perspective much like rock and roll or other genres and forms…to remove it…then you might as well remove other art and perspectives and go around with a half a** picture of things that went on...with limited knowledge...HELL Remove the renaissance if you'd like with that mindset and just go around thinking stiff topics of life..sarcasm if you haven't picked up yet. The more knowledge depending on the mindset of people reading and learning the better chances to not repeat the same MISTAKES as the past….but hey if you like living in the dark and doing what joe blow mistake did before you ….be my guest…history repeats itself for a reason…and the less you know the more likely you will instead of advance. They’re going to keep removing things from all your educational curriculums “under pretense of not necessary” mainly to save budgets…and you lose out because most of you will get caught up in your definition of the “real world”. I Courses like personal finance (teaching you simple things like personal investments, checkbooks, credit cards, loans, task to insure your not broke) have been known to help people make better investments…thats why some of your artist and business people do so well with that business mindset….and aren’t sitting owing IRS Money and bankrupt…they learned it book wise or sometimes from someone who opened the book…hell you got artist going BACK TO SCHOOL to learn this shit…but hey schools feel you that stuff like that is a waste of time and have no real application…lets save a few bucks and cut it….and then replace it with another b******* subject and charge you for it like manufacturing paper clips. If you dropped out well you still have access to books your probably learning from environment which some things you'll learn came from someone indirectly who read a book somewhere..so your as limited as them. THE MAIN argument is them removing information on our history thus limiting what future generations know about themselves…especially if the past events still remain current like racism, entertainment, values, etc…can’t know where your going till you know where you’ve been ..sound familiar? So let them keep taking s*** out….I’m laughing at you when your child comes out retarded and riding the yellow bus cuz all he knows is man invented the wheel…an extreme way to put it but it gets the point across.

who ever said hip hop does not need to be in a text book is an idiot no disrespect but sit down an think about that comment you are not a true hip hop fan or die hard as you say why i say that is hip hop got a way of teaching people I'm not talking bout busting a gun I'm talking bout the electronic aspect of hip hop it gives jobs as well as change lives a drug dealer or pimp becomes a musician learning to work computers working with wires ,making music, working with math in all aspects, reading manuals learning new words not curse words but words like fire wire, components ,and much more ,hip hop taught me how yo make music ,play a piano ,play drums build web sites ,use a computer I hate math but as a producer I have no choice but to deal with numbers if you know anything about it I'm talking about setting bars, hooks, fixing the pitch ,tempo ,chopping and editing, as well as mastering a song the whole concept of making a beat is math and to talk about culture come on people hip hop is probably the fastest growing culture and nation in the world something close to a religion so yeah I think the people in texas who are doing this dumb s*** will feel a back lash and are a bunch of idiots and who ever agrees with them are bigger bunches of asses thats why this country is all fuked up because of the control they try to dictate on civilization !!!!!!!!!! This is straight up prejudice and imperialism and if the people of texas and the rest of the world allows this this is just as bad as burning books and stopping the civil rights of americans and people across the world, we might as well be living in the middile east or cuba where people are now waking up which i think all the one track minded people need to do WAKE UPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Dam you can never have a discussion without people getting personal or acting like idiots. Shows how far people have not come. I'm die hard hip hop all day but honestly it doesn't need to be in a text book in school. Classes need to be relevant to whats needed to succeed and be productive. I mean seriously you ever met a Japanese student from japan? They don't play when it comes to teaching and they don't have all this BS garbage filling up time in school they stay focused on developing mental skills and challenge the mind. AND THEM KIDS ARE FKIN SMART. Sad to say but youth today are falling way behind.

Some body find out about when and where this open forum is. We can gripe all day on a website but the thing is if we don't say anything about it at the forum...it passes which means Hip Hop is stricken from the record point blank. For you that argue that hip hop is dying this would be a contributing blow, For those of you just complaining that people are coming into the game half assed and don't have an idea of its roots then this will enhance that. They're basically trying to make it to where younger generations not just in texas BUT EVERYWHERE won't really understand its contribution. So if you find when and where the forum is let your thoughts respectfully be heard! Its not just going to affect Texas...it affect every state since IT produces YOUR BOOKS that you use from Cali to New York and on.

Dan.C you got the best post in this topic.
You actually made me smile and dig deeper into what i was feeling.
There was a comment about Jonny Cash and Dolly Parton and why they didnt learn about them in school. Well Hip Hop is far beyond any other genre of music. People need to understand that "Hip Hop" doesn't just mean "Rap" Rap is something you do and Hip Hop is something you live. So yes it is Cultural 100%.
It's poetic and artistic. If you don't know about it then don't speak about it rather learn about it!

Comment by Lex on March 15, 2010 at 4:14pm
its cultural for blacks and not whites, its understandable.... majority (not all) of hip hop is degrading to woman and promote nothing but violence so whites choose to discredit it, again, its understandable. They didnt say Rick James, Ray Charles or James Brown is not Cultural... just hip hop because its degrading to women and promote violence.... you dumb uneducated peasants.

who on gods green earth would want to study hip hop in school, are you on f***** dope? Kids IQ would just drop lmfao.... Even black parents would be outraged.
