Swizz Beatz Addresses Megaupload Scandal "Why Would I Be A Part Of Something That Takes Away From An Artist?" [Video]

Video after the break...

In Allindstrom's interview with Producer/Entrepreneur Swizz Beatz, he talks about his various business. The most interesting of which is Megaupload. While he doesn't speak on his full business relationship with the company, you get an idea of why he teamed up with the company. He also briefly discusses why he thinks the site was shut down.

Thoughts?

I had 2 record deals with major labels in the 90's. Downloading does hurt artists but not to the degree that the labels want you to think it does. Before the 360 deals, there were 4 major ways for signed artists to monetize their products. publishing, live shows, merch and album sales. ring tones were a factor for a few years but that money dried up quickly. unless you're an A list artist like a Jay Z, Lady Gaga, U2 or Metallica, the album sales weren't the real money maker for you. Most people don't realize that the label is a bank loaning the artist money. recording budgets, manufacturing, travel costs, video production and payola all come out of the artist's portion of the sales proceeds and the artists don't get paid until the debt from these items are paid off. On top of that, the artist only gets paid every 3 months. 99% of artists don't get see much, if any money from album sales. The 360 deal now hurts artists even more because the label takes money from ALL revenue streams created by the artist. In the past this was known as cross collateralization but it's rampant now and it's the norm. The labels aren't seeing money from album sales because people are downloading so they have to find a way to get more money. the artists will sign nearly anything a label puts in front of them now because the labels are actually signing less artists and any artist that gets even a shot at being signed will likely make a deal with the Devil if they feel it could get them to the next level. by the way, that next level rarely exists in the music biz. Need proof? do you remember the ying yang twins? there are a million examples like them. Remember this when you're downloading, you're hurting a record label but the record label was already hurting the artist.

I mean They get so many free verses when the album drops, the shit’s more like a bonus Why pay for it? Why take onus?
With one click of the mouse they could own it. Don't blame the fans blame the artists for getting so lazy and putting out mediocre music and expecting fans to pay for it.

Megaupload and any other uploading sites needs to be deleted. People don’t realize that you are stealing directly from the artist when you download their music for free.. Especially if they are an independent artist which most of them now-a-days are.
