A little known fact is that Arkansas is a hotbed of untapped urban talent, particularly where independent music artists are concerned. Smoke Dogg 870 is not exception in that regard – in fact, he hails from the South Central part of Arkansas, one of the most beautiful parts of the state. His art only lends to the aesthetics of the landscape.
He currently resides in Shelbyville, Tennessee, less than an hour away from the music mecca known as Nashville. He is not only an artist in his own right, but also a label owner. ATM (“Already the Mob”) is the imprint. But the drive to become a stellar success is what pushes Smoke Dogg 870 to become a star. He cites his family, particularly his late mother, as his reason for his solid work ethic and determined spirit. In fact, he is certain he will become a rags to riches story in a very short period of time.
We caught up with Smoke Dogg 870 earlier today and here’s what he had to say:
Tell us about yourself.
SMOKE DOGG 870: I'm an independent artist who runs a label called "Already the Mob"(ATM) that I started from the ground up. I currently live in Shelbyville, Tennessee. I've been back and forward from here and Arkansas my entire life. I pride myself in my music because it's based on my real life. I've been through a lot and things are finally looking up for me. My mom passed away a couple years ago and she has been my biggest inspiration to keep it pushing with my music career. I have 3 brothers and 1 sister who have been there for me since Day 1 - always encouraging me to keep it pushing. I've been making music over half my life. I released my first mixtape at the age of 14.
Tell us about your new single “I’m Leaning”:
SMOKE DOGG 870: It’s a party song that will have everyone vibing.
Arkansas is a hotbed of raw talent. How does being from there influence your style and art?
SMOKE DOGG 870: Being from Arkansas helped me find myself in the type of music I wanted to make. Being that I was in an area where Louisiana, Atlanta and Tennessee were right up the road, their music always came to me, so hearing all the different styles, lingo, etc. showed me that I could be myself and my people would embrace it. Being that I'm from a poverty stricken city and being able to make it out made me want to make a lot of inspirational music to give other people hope that it is possible.
What sets you apart from other artists?
SMOKE DOGG 870: I have been through a lot in my life and my music reflects that. I tell the story from the other side of the gun. You can hear the pain in my voice when you listen to me. I show my fans that not all artists talk about the "glamorous" side of life. I give my fans something they can relate to.
Where can we expect to see your career in 5 years?
SMOKE DOGG 870: I see myself on top of the game, making ways for other people to make it out the struggle and see a better side of life.
Do you have hopes of getting into any other avenue(s) of entertainment?
SMOKE DOGG 870: I really want to get into acting. I love putting on a show. I've always wanted to see myself in a movie or two.
