Rock Music Outsells Rap [Nielsen rep equates rock’s dominance to the popularity to back catalogue sales of classic acts…]

XXL reports:

Rap music may rule the airwaves, but rock music surprisingly owns the charts. In a story in New York’s Daily News, writer Jim Farber took a close look at the Nielsen SoundScan figures to discover that rock was the most profitable genre in terms of record sales last year.

While hip-hop attained several serious accomplishments last year – including earning a four percent sales increase in sales (the only musical genre to experience a sales increase) and boasting the highest selling album of the year with Eminem’s Recovery (3.5 million units and counting)—rock music moved more albums due to the popularity of classic rock acts back catalogue sales.

According to SoundScan, 103 million rock discs were purchased last year, while only 27 rap LPs were sold. If alternative and metal CDs are taken into consideration, then that bumps rock’s overall numbers to 188 million.

“There isn’t any genre that translates better to catalogue sales than rock,” David Bukula, Nielsen’s senior vice president told the Daily News. “Last year, 55% of our overall track sales came from catalogue.”

“Who’s going back to rediscover DMX right now, as opposed to who’s just discovering the Beatles?” Bakula added.

Nobody should be surprised by this. There is no point to this article. No one should argue, or even care about this because again, this information is pointless. Rock music outsells rap; WE KNOW THIS!!!! That's how it has been, and that's how it is going to be.

@bryant mungo why are you crying I never said I judge them on street cred. Show me where people are talking about those artists you mentioned apart from Wu, Pac, Big and Em. The internet is buzzing with s*** people like Wayne, Gucci, Wacka etc not actual decent hip hop artists.

@ infinite

maybe it takes talent to play instruments in ROCK MUSIC,

but what about the actual singing ???

because 90% of those Rock bands cant sing for s***, most of them, all they do is yell & scream over there music, lol,

& it sounds horrible, lol lol

Rock music takes a lot more skill than rap. Anybody can rap.

Ok here is what plays a HUGE part in these statistics... The generation that listens to Rap is waaaaaay more viral than the generation listening to Rock. So.. The generation listening to rap music downloads waaaaaay more LP's rather than purchasing them, which is what that older generation is still doing; buying there Rock music from a store. That factor isn't even MENTIONED in this article.

Everyone on this thread (other than blatant idiots) understands hip hop. And We all understand that it is judged in many ways. People say it has no creativity because we sample old tracks, not understanding that the creative parts are the words said over the sampled beat. Its about what you have to say and as long as Record Executives have control over whats on the album or whats said or when it comes out, then its going to get harder and harder for Hip Hop and Rap to Prosper. Yea Eminem Jay Z and Wayne have unrealistic fan bases that cannot be duplicated be any means these days, but once we stop stealing music, and rappers start telling a story or relaying a message that doesn't involve various sexual positions, sexual redundancies, gangsta or violence glorification, it will never be the same. Bottom line is Hip hop is going prep, which usually talks sex and Money, or it stays gangsta and we talk about killing and sex. Like come on man. Someone Say what they are thinking not what you think sounds cool cause someone else was successful.

people got to understand that most Rap music is either downloaded or bootlegged anyway,

so the average hiphop fan gets it for free,

& most Rock fans will buy the actual album, especially older White People who loves CLASSIC ROCK when they were young.

& @ Duke & Mike,

the real Rap & HipHop culture judges the artist thru creative lyrical abilty,

rappers like -

& a whole list of more are not judged by "STREET CRED",

They all got there respect from being great LYRICIST, & they put together incredible word play that yall couldnt ever do, even if somebody put a gun to yall's heads.....

All i know is, Eminem and 50 were the last real rappers to exist. Everybody else seems to be doin it for the money.

I just hope that 50 and Eminem take over again. Then Hip Hop will go back to the way it was. As a matter of fact, i know they will :)

i really think the biggest problem in hip hop today is the diversity...meaning there is none..everything is a quick gimmick and a bunch of stupid media pranks. Hip hop use to be about so many different things...Nowadays its hard for people to find something to listen to. And forget having something kids can listen to..its all sex, drugs, violence, and more sex...thats all good for some, but the other half of the people have nothing, so as people age they turn to other genres of music because they cant always relate to hip hop anymore...
