When you're a teenager, it's almost expected to make some idiotic decisions in the process of learning and becoming an adult.
However, a 17 year old boy in China has made a decision that may just cost him his life.
The teen stumbled across an ad in which a broker was offering over $3k for a kidney.
The deal sounded great to the teen who had been dying to purchase an iPad2 since it had hit stores.
The boy proceeded to follow the instructions in the ad, negotiated a fee with the agent and his partners, and traveled to the city of Chenzhou in the Hunan Province. His kidney was removed at a local hospital, and he was discharged after three days. He was paid about $3,400 for the procedure.
On the other hand, the broker who set everything up was paid around $35K for the kidney.
Having a few thousand dollars the boy went on a shopping spree, purchasing the iPad 2 he coveted along with other electronics and headed home.
"When he came back, he had a laptop and a new Apple handset," his mother, identified as Miss Liu, told a local news station, showing off the livid red scar where her son's kidney was removed, "I wanted to know how he had got so much money and he finally confessed that he had sold one of his kidneys."
While things seemed great at first, they quickly went downhill over the coming months.
The boy is now regreting his decision since his heath is worsening. After having his kidney removed, he developed renal deficiency and is now deteriorating, Reuters reported.
The surgeon and broker are among five people who have been arrested for the illegal surgery.
In China, where just a fraction of the people who need organ transplants are able to get them, kidneys are a hot commodity — but so are Apple products. Since the first Apple Store opened in China about four years ago, demand has gone thru the roof in the country.
