Jay-Z will produce and perform on the soundtrack to the upcoming film The Great Gatsby. The movie, starring Leonardo Dicaprio is an adaptation of F. Scott Fitzgerald's novel of 1920's America.

Hov said he will be teaming up with some of America's top musical artists on the soundtrack according to the New York Daily News. The Brooklyn, New York rapper plans to bring a modern "jazz age" energy to the project.

Dicaprio introduced Jay to the film's director  Baz Luhrmann.

"As soon as I spoke with Baz and Leonardo, I knew this was the right project," Jay-Z said in a statement.

The movie will open the 2013 Cannes film festival in May.

Loved the book and the old film with Robert Redford. Wonder how the modern adaptation will be. It's hard to remake classics but modern versions help English teachers bring the book alive to today's students - even when the films suck. I am playing the recent Hamlet film with Ethan Hawke (which I think was horrible compared to the films with Mel Gibson and Kenneth Branagh) and we just finished Coriolanus with Ralph Fiennes at an alternative school for high school students with behavior and emotional problems. The students are absolutely loving Shakespeare with the help of the these films (and of course their great teacher). F. Scott Fitzgerald and Ernest Hemingway - still 2 of the greatest American writers. I miss great American literature.
