Interview With Hip Hop Artist - Matt The V

Who is Matt The V & where you reppin?

My name is Matt The V, and I'm from Detroit Michigan currently living in Madison, Wisconsin. I am also a Graphic Designer working in the Video Game Industry. I've lived in a couple cities across Michigan, and I rep each one, but my heart will always be in the D.

What Influenced you to become a rapper/emcee/lyricist?

I had friends growing up who would freestyle, spit raps in their cars before going to school, and I really admired how they were able to put words together like that on the fly. I eventually started chiming in here and there and eventually caught on to it. So I guess freestyling would be how I first got into it.

Who are some of favorite Artists?

I enjoy many aritsts, but my favorites would be Jay for his longevity, Em for his aggression, Tech N9ne for his artistry, and Lil Wayne because of his consistency. Oh yeah, Method Man and Redman too.

What music are you working on & What Are Your current & upcoming releases?

I'm working on 2 singles "Much Better" and "Going Nowhere" with producer E. Smitty at SoundAliveRecords and im really really excited to get these out to the public. Smitty smashed the production and I did my thing on the tracks. "Much Better" is basically an internal struggle with myself thinking would it have been "Much Better" if I had not left my hometown and played it safe. I came up with the name of the song after Smitty sent me a beat I was not so keen on, so he sent me a new one, and I though ahh, this one is "Much Better" hah, so yeah. "Going Nowhere" is a song about my struggles as a commercial artist working under tight design constraints and how my voice is (or isnt) heard when it comes to creative direction. It is a song that says "well, f*** if i cant have it my way at work, imma do this music and vent through that". Aside that, I go on to explain how as a Designer ive developed a very assertive character style, some might deem narcissistic, as I am always in the position of convincing people that my designs are the correct ones. It is a side effect of the industry I suppose..

If you had to pick 1 Artist to feature on a record with you who would it be?

Honestly, even though hes not in my "Favorite Aritsts" category I would go with "Astro" a friend turned me on to him years ago and I thought he had so much soul and incredible flow for such a young dude, so yeah probably him.

Where do you see yourself in the next 5 years?

My goals are to merge my Design skills with my Music skills and create a dope brand where the music reflects the brand and vise versa. In five years I would like to see the Music grow and increase my online as well as physical presence throughout my city and the midwest, or even better, world wide.

What can fans/listeners expect from your music?

They can expect a dynamic flow, with sharp turns here and there, carrying you to unexpected places in the psyche. It's difficult to predict my patterns, and I take pride in that because my goal is to make you curious about where I'll go next. My music makes you think like a philosopher who digs into his brain to figure out why people do the things they do. A lot of my music asks questions and provides possible solutions from different viewpoints. I take value in discussion between different opinions and like to point out where I see that happen or dont happen in real life. I get most of my material from the s*** that i see around me, or the things that I do or go though. I speak on values and how they relate to friends, family and culture.

What inspires you?

It inspires me when veteran rappers can still get on songs looooong after they've been hot and still spit something worth listening to. Often times I think "damn, I thought this guy's career was over, then boom, he drops the sickest verse you've heard from him in years, and you think s***, he's still got it" That kinda stuff inspires me to the fullest and makes me realize, at 30, im not young, but I still got time left, haha.
