If today you tried to log in to one of your favorite sites that allowed the downloading of pirated movies, music, music videos or sold counterfeit goods, chances are it's gone
The Department of Justice, Homeland Security Investigations and National Intellectual Property Rights Coordination Center
have been quite busy the last couple of days.
Lots of hip hop fans were in shock when they signed on to RapGodfathers, com
yesterday, only to find the sites had been seized by ICE
But those seizures were just tip of the iceberg. Dozens of other domains have fallen victim in the U.S. Government's
latest attempt to shut down rampant piracy and bootlegging that is costing the record industry, movie companies and clothing manufacturers billions of dollars annually.
As you would expect, lots of domain owners were caught completely off guard.
“My domain has been seized without any previous complaint or notice from any court!
” the owner of Torrent-Finder told TorrentFreak. “I firstly had DNS downtime. While I was contacting GoDaddy I noticed the DNS had changed. Godaddy had no idea what was going on and until now they do not understand the situation and they say it was totally from ICANN."
Cori W. Baqssett,
a spokewoman for Ice confirmed the seizures in a statement to the New York Times
“ICE office of Homeland Security Investigations executed court-ordered seizure warrants against a number of domain names. As this is an ongoing investigation, there are no additional details available at this time
