Extreme: Florida Church Planning 'Koran Burning' To Mark 9th Anniversary Of 9-11 Attacks
A FLORIDA church is promoting an event where it will burn copies of the Koran to mark the ninth anniversary of the September 11 attacks on the U.S.
In the announcement on its Facebook page, The Dove World Outreach Center of Gainesville, Florida, asked other religious groups to join in standing "against the evil of Islam. Islam is of the devil!"
The Facebook event has received more than 1,500 "Like" recommendations by users, but had also been attacked with a number of threatening messages posted on the page and corresponding anti-Islam rants.
The church's pastor, Terry Jones - who has written a book titled "Islam is of The Devil" and sells T-shirts bearing the same message - defended the controversial event.
"Islam and Sharia law was responsible for 9/11," Jones told Agence France-Presse.
"We will burn Korans because we think it's time for Christians, for churches, for politicians to stand up and say no; Islam and Sharia law is not welcome in the U.S.
"We've got many death threats from jihad groups, but we cannot react by fear and we cannot compromise our beliefs. Somebody must stand up."
The National Association of Evangelicals (NAE) called for the church to cancel the event, The Christian Post reported.
"It sounds like the proposed Koran burning is rooted in revenge," NAE president Leith Anderson said.
"Yet the Bible says that Christians should ‘make sure that nobody pays back wrong for wrong, but always try to be kind to each other and to everyone else.'"
Mainstream Muslim groups also denounced the move and lamented the sentiments promoted by the Gainesville church.
"Unfortunately in [Florida] and nationwide, Islamophobia are actually on the rise," Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) spokesman Ramsey Kilic told AFP.
"I'm more afraid of those who have anti-Muslim sentiments and may think this is a legitimate action and may want to attack a mosque or attack a Muslim on the street," he added.
However, Kilic said, "we are not taking any action to avoid this... we don't want to give attention to this, because that's what they want."
Besides the Koran burning ceremony, the Dove World Outreach Center also plans an anti-homosexual event August 2 outside Gainesville's City Hall. The "No Homo Mayor Protest" targets the city's first openly gay mayor, Craig Lowe.

This is seriously sad on a large scale.
First of all, Rest In Peace to those that died in the 9/11 attack and I hope those who lost family and friends may understand that Islam and REAL Muslims weren't responsible.
I am a 18 year old Muslim living in Bronx, New York. I have many friends who had family that died in the 9/11 attack. My friends couldn't believe it but soon learned many new things from that attack. We are still friends and we understand each other and we now know those that follow Bin Laden aren't real Muslims. In my religion self- suicide isn't jihad(which means to fight for the sake of religion). It clearly states multiple times through the Quran, the Islam's Holy Book, it is a serious sin to take one's own life and will result in the individual going straight to hell. Bin Laden's followers are not real Muslims but are brain-washed individuals who have nowhere else to turn to for help. These boys/men may have came from poor families are orphans or can't support themselves. They turn to people who have power, Bin Laden and they do as he tells them to.
I follow my religion, I love my religion. I respect EVERY OTHER religion out there, or anyone's belief if they don't believe in a God. I have hundreds of friends who are not Muslim and they don't see me as a bomber. They don't see my sisters and brothers as bombers. Bombing doesn't come to mind when they see Arabic writing on my wall in my house.
I don't know if Priest Jones lost any friends or family in this attack, but it sounds like he hates Muslims enough to write a book about it. I was laughing when I read that Priest Jones wants to burn Qurans. I was laughing because he wants to burn Qurans to show his hatred. Burning Qurans is the ritual Muslims take when the Holy Book is worn out or over used. We don't throw Qurans in the garbage, we don't throw it in the trash. WE, Muslims, burn the Quran so it can be ashes instead of being in the trash. So I found it kind of funny that he would try to burn the Qurans as a sign of disrespect when it probably mean nothing to us, real Muslims. As for those death threats, those who sent them are clearly ignorant, and I hope the don't add to the fire that Muslims are evil. We can all be friends but its up to the individual.
Anyway I want to thank God for being able to send this message, and I hope you guys understand and if you want to understand more just ask. I hope every one can find a good Muslim friend. I hope God blesses everyone. Shout out to the Thisis50.com community. One Love.
