What is your name and what city do you rep?

Yooo what's happening! My name is Sumedh Chatterjee, but my friends call me sume. I'm originally from Kolkata, West bengal INDIA! But I consider myself a citizen of the planet.

What is unique about you and your music?

I'm different, I've always known it. There was something about me that always kept me curious about life and constantly improving. My music represents a lot of different factors- spirituality and transcendence, humor and meta-awareness. I wouldn't even give my music a genre, it shifts and transcends normality. I am an Indian rapper, which is uncommon already. The main goal of my music is to inspire and elevate people's mood. I have always been incredibly versatile and experimental with my style and aesthetic, if you ask my fans they’ll tell you how i’ve evolved!

What shaped your music?

A lot of life reference experiences, influences and accolades. I think Habbo Hotel, an online video game got me rap battling. Which led me to writing music. I used to listen to music from all genres growing up and living internationally gave me a different perspective on life. I would always observe the world around me intuitively. I hope to connect people to themselves to begin their self-awareness journeys. I definitely wish to explore that topic with my music. I think negative influences in my life have all taught me a lesson and influenced my musical artistry too! The closest people around me influence my music too, my friends, my girl, my fam! I know with your guys’s relentless support, I wouldn’t be to the level I am today.

When did you realize you were going to make music professionally?

I always knew I had a passion for it. I have been rapping ever since i was nine, only until the past month or so I decided I would take it more seriously. My mentality has always been let the chips fall where they may.

What type of music do you listen to?

I listen to everything, anything i can listen to draw inspiration from. I love rap, hip hop and even some new wave trap artists. I think probably Drake, Eminem and even rappers like Talib Kweli! My biggest inspiration to my music surprisingly has been from me watching cartoons,' specially the Simpsons. I used to watch that every Sunday at one point! D'oh! I also love listening to genre-bending artists such as electronic R&B like PARTYNEXTDOOR as well!

Who, to you, is the most undervalued music artist?

To be honest, I’m a big fan of art rap with artists such as Rory Ferreira (Milo) is incredible to me. He just isn’t afraid to be himself. I love how approachable and honest his spoken word style is.

How do you prepare for your performances?

I haven’t performed in a while, been focusing on recording fire tracks. I want to though!! It gives me a rush! In the past i usually used to chant mantras to myself and stare myself down in the mirror. Some tongue twisters maybe?

What ignites your (song) writing flow?

Presence, mindfulness and spontaneity. I sometimes like to meditate before a good brainstorming or writing bars session! Even a recording session!

What do you do when you don’t do music (creative or otherwise) and that you are passionate about?

I’m passionate about transforming people’s lives from good to great. I’m primarily interested in shaping the young minds of this next generation to thrive. I am a life coach, primarily my focus is on creativity and transformation, however it brings me joy when I get a client (coachee) get that one epiphany moment, you can see it in the gleam of their eyes, the pupils dilate. That’s what motivates me, that’s what I want more people to walk away with from my coaching sessions.

Success to you is…

a paradox. Inspirational leaders can scale the distinction between doing something and making money versus doing something in order to make money. If you do something and make money you create space for people to embrace that thing genuinely. But if the reason to do it is money, we disconnect and we disengage. You want to be unattached to the outcome on one hand, and on the other you have to be so attached to the outcome. It doesn’t make sense, just like life, there are mysterious things that happen all the time. We cant explain it. But just because we cant explain it doesn’t mean it’s not real. But it’s a paradox too, since everything happens for a reason. Our egos wish to know and be certain about things, however sometimes it’s okay to let go, trust your instincts and surrender to the success we know we’re all capable of.

What do you wish you were told when you first started rapping that you think would help artists starting out?

Don’t stop practicing, seriously! A lot of my success is due to my resilience and willing to keep moving forward. I have an unwavering soul mission to inspire as many people as I can with my music. Freestyle in the subway, don’t even care who’s watching, express yourself, this is your art, this is your life. Another thing i would say is -Laugh it off!! (also a title of one of my tracks- type in laugh it off - skriptz for the lyric video!)
