According to the NY Post, A Brooklyn woman was killed by what was believed to be a stray bullet was actually shot after she ran to the aid of a family friend who was being car-jacked and pistol-whipped by some punks, relatives said today.

Kerrie Johnson, 51, was shot in the head after a gunman opened fire along Clifton Place in Bed-Stuy around 9:30. The gunman, according to witnesses, was one of two men assaulting the boyfriend of Johnson’s niece.

Neighbors and relatives said Johnson was a long-time girlfriend of former NBA player World B. Free, who grew up in Brooklyn before a pro career that included stints with the Philadelphia 76ers and the Golden State Warriors.

According to sources, Johnson’s niece and her boyfriend were getting into his new Lexus when a pair of thugs tried to steal his car. Police said the niece ran into her apartment building for help, and relatives ran out to their aid.

Johnson’s niece, Jeromeka Johnson, 24, said her cousin’s boyfriend was being assaulted, and that her aunt was trying to help.

"She screamed, ‘They’re going to kill him,’" Jeromeka said. "She ran up the street to help and they started shooting. She was running back toward the house and they shot her in the head."

Johnson worked as a screen clerk at the New York Mercantile Exchange.

Johnson’s 14-year-old nephew was shot in the leg and was taken to Kings County Hospital.

The man who was assaulted suffered only minor abrasions. Cops said he has a criminal record, and has refused to cooperate with authorities.

"My sister and son got shot," said Johnson’s brother, Michael, 53. "I’ve lost two sisters in one year. So I’m not doing good at all. She’s everything to this family. Why would you do that? What can you say? Why would anybody shoot a gun at another person."

it's sad to hear this mess. i'm confused on why they didn't just give up the car and why they had to get her involved in anything. if i'm getting robbed and dude has a gun, I'm not going to call my mother to get up in it.
