Django Dolls Discontinue Due to Black Leaders Crying Racism
Daily Mail reported that after major outrage from advocacy groups like Al Sharpton's National Action Network and Project Islamic Hope, the figurines that resembled the characters from Quentin Tarantino's biggest blockbuster hit Django Unchained has been discontinued and withdrawn from sale.
In combination with the Weinstein Company, the studio that produced the movie, National Entertainment Collectible Assocation (NECA) contributed to the making of the dolls. Before production stopped, they were able to make a thousand of them.
Amazon.com was selling three figures that depicted the freed slave Django (Jamie Foxx), his sold wife Broomhilda (Kerry Wasington), and another slave Stephen (Samuel L. Jackson). They were apart of a series of several characters in the movie.
This marketing venture came to and end after black community leaders expressed their disgust.
Najee Ali, the director of Project Islamic Hope, said these action figures made a mockery of the horrors of slavery and the African American experience. He took it as a blatant slap in the face to his ancestors. The activist added that if dolls for Inglorious Bastards were made the Jewish community would totally dispute it.
On the other side of the issue, NECA and Weinstein's actions weren't meant to offend. According to them, these figurines were only meant to be collectibles.
