When sorting out the greatest mixtapes of all time, you have to keep in mind what distinguishes a mixtape from an album: It's the most official that unofficial can get.
Mixtapes are rough around the edges. Often, they don't have the sheen of high-cost record company studio time. It's a mishmash of showcases: What's happened, what's to come, who someone holds as favored friends, as far as rappers and producers go. It's rapping over other people's beats. It's disses. It's gritty. It's f***-ups kept on the track, skits that would never make it past a label, and samples that could never pass clearance.
That's what makes a great mixtape great. All of the spontaneous qualities that are too scruffy for a proper release, finally receive the proper treatment. And unlike a great album, the formula for a great mixtape isn't as refined, and it relies slightly more on the side of serendipity and luck, with the essential elements coming together the right way at that perfect moment in time.

Good list, but a lot of politics with this one. 50 has more than just 1 mixtape that should be in the top ten, and I wont even begin to name em all. Because lets keep it 100, thats what 50 does best. The mixtape!

@smooth...DUDE!!! drakes mixtape sounded like a album dummy...it didnt have the stuff mixtapes are known for! dummy...50 cent said it himself he never had a hotter mixtape than drake becuz he didnt make his mixtapes like albums...even though his mixtape is better than albums...the point is a mixtape is suppose to be the snack and the album is suppose to be the whole meal..for example a mixtape contains djs hypeing it up,16 bars or 8 bars tracks,freestyles,,2 minute songs,,you talkin at the end of tracks like 50 cent does,songs with no hooks.,hooks with only 16 bars,.you talkin on the phone with whoever,,you talkin on the radio,and MUCH MORE!!!!!
