I could go on and on about this but I have to go so I will sum up with one of my fav passages. "Therefore, since we are justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom we have obtained access to this grace in which we stand; and we boast in our hope of sharing the glory of God. And not only that, but we also boast in our sufferings, knowing that suffering produces endurance, and endurance produces character, and character produces hope, and hope does not disappoint us, because God’s love has been poured into our hearts through the Holy Spirit that has been given to us." (Rom 5:1-5 NRSV) When God is with you, you can boast in your sufferings because you know for sure that God will bring you through it all. You also know that God is making you stronger, building your endurance and character while keeping you full of hope. Of course this only works for those who remain faithful and keep God 1st. God did not tell us that life would be easy. Jesus actually said that people would hate and persecute us, doing us the same way they did Him. What God did say is that He would be there no matter what. And those who have experienced the presence of God in their lives know this to be the truth. My life has been extremely hard but God always get me through it and He keeps me while I am suffering. I am a descendant of an American slave. And as a people, we have had to suffer through much in this country. In addition to that, I have had to suffer in many ways that have nothing to do with race. And I would have it no other way. If it were not for all of the suffering I've been through, I may not have had to rely on God so much and may not have become as close to Him as I am. I would not be as strong and probably not be the great person that I am. I can't imagine what it is like to not experience the presence of God in one's life. Those with true faith and belief can get through anything with God. Whether it's slavery, imprisonment, absentee parents, abuse, racism, injustice, disease, loss of a loved one, betrayal, poverty, even death - no matter what it is - God carries us through it.
“For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord.” (Rom 8:38-39 NIV)
So to answer your question - slavery nor any other type of harsh circumstance can separate us from the love of God. Once a person experiences the presence of God, nothing and no one can take that away. That’s how a black American can still take the Word of God seriously.
Praise be to God! Thank You Father, Thank You Jesus and Thank You Holy Spirit for all that You do!

As far as your NT quotes. It hard to get the full context of a passage when you only give the part of the paragraph that you think makes the point you want to make. "Slaves, obey your earthly masters with respect and fear, and with sincerity of heart, just as you would obey Christ. Obey them not only to win their favor when their eye is on you, but like slaves of Christ, doing the will of God from your heart. Serve wholeheartedly, as if you were serving the Lord, not men, because you know that the Lord will reward everyone for whatever good he does, whether he is slave or free. And masters, treat your slaves in the same way. Do not threaten them, since you know that he who is both their Master and yours is in heaven, and there is no favoritism with him." (Ephesians 6:5-9 NIV) Here, Paul is saying despite your circumstances, be God's best, consider your services to others as a service to God. And that God will reward you for all good that you do even the good done for one's master. He also tells slave masters to treat their slaves in a manner that honors God. For your 1 Tim quote, you left out the rest of verse 2. “All who are under the yoke of slavery should consider their masters worthy of full respect, so that God’s name and our teaching may not be slandered. Those who have believing masters should not show them disrespect just because they are fellow believers. Instead, they should serve them even better because their masters are dear to them as fellow believers and are devoted to the welfare of their slaves. These are the things you are to teach and insist on.” (1 Tim 6:1-2 NIV) Once again, believers who are in a slavery circumstance must consider their standing with God first and represent as God’s children at all times despite their circumstances. Serve other in service to God. Paul also states, in the part you left out of your quote, that the slave masters are devoted to the welfare of their slaves and fellow believers of the slaves. This is called keeping God first no matter what your circumstance is.

I cannot speak for every black man but I can speak for myself. God's chosen people were enslaved themselves for 400 years in Egypt. This in itself shows that slavery is a circumstance and does not define who a person is. Slavery and caste systems of ancient times should not be compared to American slavery. Back then there was debt slavery where people sold themselves and their children into slavery to pay off debts, those who became slaves through war captivity, etc. People even sold themselves into slavery when they could not take care of themselves and prevent starvation. There was no welfare back then. Slave owners could also be punished for treating their slaves too harshly. So don't think about American slavery when thinking about slavery in Biblical times.
The Bible is very clear that children of God will face many harsh circumstances and suffer much. But what we know as believers is that no matter what we have to face and endure, God is with us. That is how we get through all of it. And yes, even as a slave, you know that you are God's best despite your circumstances. Look at Joseph, son of Jacob, who was sold into slavery by his own brothers. Despite his circumstances, with God for him no one could stop him from being faithful to God and eventually rising to be the 2nd most powerful man in Egypt. Joseph went from wealth to slavery overnight because his brothers envied him. Yet he became the best slave and then best prisoner that any had ever seen although he didn’t deserve to be either. He served his earthly masters well. This is what caused him to rise out of every situation. He knew who he was despite his circumstances. God's favor follows us wherever we go and through whatever we face.

We are born to be free. I agree with you. And the government definitely does not have my best interest in mind a lot of the times. I am not anti-government but I still hear what you're saying. When it comes down to it, people need to do what they need to do. And I agree that the government is supposed to work for us. My initial comment on this issue was in response to a comment made about what is stated in the 2nd amendment. That's what prompted my initial comment on this topic and I think I made my point. Thanks for the healthy debate. As you can tell, I also like to be heard.

What is written down in tha bill of rights and constitution does not mean shet. Our natural rights do NOT come from a document, they are from our creator. We dont require ammendments to say we are NOT slaves!! Erry man is born to be free, we are NOT tha property of others who can make determinations on our rights!! GOD made men, men made slaves!! Juss because there is a 2nd ammendment does not mean shet, my right to proteck myself is mine and granted by birth not by a document!! I can use whateva means to proteck myself fists, bats, wrench, knife, gun, grenade...i make that call not tha gubbment. Tha problem is gubbaments think they are autonomous, but they are NOT!! Tha gubbaments authority is allowed and granted by tha citizens!! Gubbament has NO innate powers unless we permit them power to govern in OUR intrest!! Gubbaments think they have inherent power to dictate, but they got tha game fugged up and we allow them to manipulate us in that manner!! Of course we know gubbaments are nefarious, we should not trust tha gubbament as far as we can throw them!!

The "religiously scrupulous" quote were not my words. Those words were written by the person who initially proposed and wrote what is now the 2nd amendment. It was quoted to show what the intent of the writers were. You said that I should go read a book or watch a movie before I talk. I was just showing you that my comments about the intent of the 2nd amendment were based on the fact that I am extremely well read. Braveheart was a good film but I can rely on actual factual accounts of what people actually wrote and said. Like I said, I thought our debate was about the 2nd amendment and its intent not what we think is best or how we think it should be. I have a lot of issues with this government and disagree with many of its laws and practices. But I don't deny that the law states what it states.

And as far as the wolf coming for me - I am all about being prepared for what comes. And I am one who thinks that sh*t is about to hit the fan and we need to be prepared. I mean being prepared in all ways if sh*t goes down. I am even for civilian combat and other type of preparedness training. You are right, evil does exist. My argument was never about whether people should be able to have guns. It is about whether the 2nd amendment gives everyone the right to bear any type of arms. The truth is I am down with being able to protect me and mine (you just don't know), but I am also down with someone running a thorough check on my background to find out if I have a tendancy to be mentally unbalanced or think I have a right to take out anyone I want. I am one of those who is able to handle the responsiblity of gun ownership. You may be too but not everyone is. Responsible gun owners have no desire to go shoot up a class of 6 year olds. Responsible gun owners are not keeping their guns around their mentally unstable teens. Responsible gun owners are not trafficking guns into the inner cities so that black youth can kill each other. Responsible gun owners don't use guns to rape, steal and commit other crimes.
