George Zimmerman Apologizes To Trayvon Martin's Family In Court "I Did Not Know If He Was Armed." His Bond Is Set At $150,000 [Video]

A Florida judge Friday set a $150,000 bond for George Zimmerman, the neighborhood watch volunteer who shot an unarmed black teenager and touched off a firestorm of controversy about race and the American justice system.
Zimmerman, 28, appeared in court in a dark suit and gray tie, and, in a surprising move, took the stand. There, in a voice verging on meek, he apologized to the family of Trayvon Martin, the 17-year-old he admits he shot -- but only, he says, in self-defense.
"I wanted to say I am sorry for the loss of your son," he said to the parents, who attended the hearing in the central Florida city of Sanford, where the shooting took place. "I did not know how old he was. I thought he was a little bit younger than I am, and I did not know if he was armed or not."
Zimmerman turned himself in to authorities on April 11 after learning he would be charged with second-degree murder in the February incident. Seminole County Circuit Judge Kenneth Lester Jr. set the bond after a sometimes-contentious two-hour hearing in which attorneys for the state repeatedly brought up two incidents from Zimmerman's past. The first was an arrest for assaulting an undercover officer during an underage-drinking crackdown; the second was an injunction filed by a former girlfriend who said Zimmerman struck her.
In the end, Lester decided that the arrest was a "run of the mill" incident in Florida, and that the injunction was "somewhat mild." He granted the bond, with numerous conditions, including an order that Zimmerman wear an electronic global positioning device so that authorities can track his location. Zimmerman also surrendered his passport.
Zimmerman's attorney,Mark O'Mara, argued that his client needed to remain in a secret location due to threats on his life. O'Mara asked Lester if his client could leave the state. The judge told the attorney to see if he could work those details out with law enforcement authorities.
The hearing was also notable for the extensive grilling that O'Mara gave one of the investigators for the state attorney's office, Dale Gilbreath, who helped prepare the probable cause affidavit that was the basis for Zimmerman's arrest.
The affidavit says Zimmerman "confronted" Martin, after which a struggle ensued. In a likely preview of the defense strategy at trial, O'Mara questioned the use of the word "confronted."
"Do you know who started the fight?" he asked the investigator at one point.
"Do I know? No," Gilbreath said.
"Do you have any evidence that supports who may have started the fight?"
"No" Gilbreath said.

6 dudes starting shi't with you, isn't a kid with a phone minding his own business. You act like Zimmerman didn't do anything wrong when he was the one who initiated the whole thing and killed a kid that wasn't doing anything wrong at all. Tayvon didn't start s*** with Zimmerman, it was the other way around.

How the fuc'k you gonna say it's self defense when you don't even know if they are armed. You can't say You felt threatened if they are not threatening you with anything. Dude shot the kid without any reason at all.

Ima be honest and say im the kinda person that believes innocent til proven guilty but this dude in the slightest bit does not seem like he feels guilty about what he did. Its sad. R.I.P. Trayvon Martin. Hopefully justice prevails in your name.

would his age have made it ok to kill him? if you got into a fight and he was beating you why wouldnt he have just shot you? This case is open and shut he called 911 to pursue someone who was doing nothing then pursued him after he was told not too then he shoots the boy like why are we talking about this? Oh yeah because it happened in a red neck state to a black kid thats why and dont say stupid things like zimmerman is hispanic so he's not racist we all know deeper than white skin is the white mentality "im in a gated community among the upper echelon with the white folks people with hoodies dont belong around here!"...

RIOTIN' is not the solution, that what the system wants. They'll show black man beating to death a latino guy, a latino guy beating a white guy and BOUM, civil war to hide what really going on on America politicly.

@BORN 2 REIGN... Unlike you, I don't need to ATTACK anything or anybody. As for your "claims", I recognize them for what they are: CLAIMS. Neither you or I was a witness to what happened on the night Trayvon was killed. Therefore, I refuse to waste my EMOTIONS on this situation. Unfortunately, it can be concluded from your comments that you chose to DIGEST what the media and/or rumors have FED you. If you're beating someone's head in, they would feel their life is in danger and the law states that they have the right to stop you by any means. People can die from being beaten excessively. According to Zimmerman and the witness, Trayvon was on top beating him. Zimmerman couldn't flee if he wanted to so he resorted to stopping him by any means. However, he's still responsible because he was the one who initiated the event.

Well, the pics are out. He was beat up, so I have NO idea how they plan to get a murder 2 charge. Involuntary manslaughter seemed guaranteed. 10:1 the prosecution f's this up. Burden of proof is on them.
