While announcing a joint tour with Motley Crue on Tuesday [March 22] veteran rocker Gene Simmons decided to take a shot at one of the current queens of pop music, Rihanna.
"We're sick and tired of girls getting up there with dancers and karaoke tapes in back of them," he said according to Billboard. "The guys you see on stage are playing their instruments. No fake bullsh*t. Leave that to the Rihanna, Shmianna and anyone who ends their name with an 'A.'"
Simmons is apparently upset at the decline in popularity of rock and roll, and his opinion was backed up by Tommy Lee of Motley Crue and Eric Singer of KISS.
"No disrespect to Rihanna, she's a great singer, but we're in a slump for some sh*t that has some personality and appeal beyond a bunch of pop stuff that's floating around out there," Lee told Billboard.com. "I'm glad he said that actually because I don't think i can bear watching another f*cking award show that is just a little bit better than 'American Idol.' It's f*cking pathetic to watch people go out and f*cking karaoke with a bunch of lights and video. It's all completely watered down."
"He's right, anyone can buy a light show, anyone can buy pyro," KISS' Eric Singer added. "You can't keep reinserting a different he or she in there. you have to be able to get up there and play and sing."
There are a lot of singers lip-syncing during live performances these days. Who else do you think they were referring to? Do they have a valid point?
