Anwar “Wicked” Shakir was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. You could say that he was destined to get involved with music; his father was an aspiring drummer. At the young age of 10, his parents decided to move to Connecticut, Wicked would find himself residing in one of New Havens most dangerous crime infested neighborhoods; Church Street South housing projects also known as "The Jungle." It was there he learned the streets, Wicked stated, “I didn't want to be a part of that life style I actually used to rap about not being that type of person.” However it was in those projects where Wicked would learn that the dealers and thugs were not bad people, but in fact were just trying to survive in a cycle that's been passed on for generations.
“I remember the kingpin of my projects was the biggest dealer in Connecticut, he would drive me and my friends around or send us to the store with one hundred dollar bills. He let us keep the change…that was big for us” said Wicked. “The dealers in my hood were so big back then that rappers would come to the neighborhood cook outs and hang out.” “...this was my life,” said Wicked. “I would see rappers like Big Daddy Kane, Biz Markie, Busta Rhymes, and LL Cool J on TV then see them in my hood when I went outside and that was all the inspiration I needed to pursue a career in this music industry.”
Years went by Wicked had been jailed for multiple felony charges including carrying an unlicensed firearm and narcotics charges; With a “I Will Not Lose” attitude Wicked continued to persevere and went on to take the money he'd been saving up and invested it into a successful record store known as Diamond Records. He owned and operated Diamond Records for seven years.
In 2009, Wicked has become one of the new generations most prominent, prophetic, lyrical, and visual MCs to touch a microphone. He has track record of consistency dropping multiple mix CDs with big named DJs, such as DJ Big Mike, DJ Kay Slay, DJ L, and many others. Wicked has out done many artist in his weight division; he has a very strong digital presence as well, for example, his latest release Code of the Streets Vol. 5 can be found on iTunes, Rhapsody, Napster, Amazon, and Lala. Wicked is currently receiving an overwhelming amount of support from his home town radio station Hot93.7 WZMX which frequency can be captured in all of Connecticut, Springfield, Massachusetts, ad parts of New York.
He has opened shows for Busta Rhymes and Mary J Blige; he also has recorded with established artist such as Dipset's JR Writer, Wu tang’s Reakwon, Roc-a-fella’s Amil, Blackmoon’s Buck Shot, Def Squad’s Keith Murray and Eric Sermon, as well as countless others. Later this year, Wicked is gearing up for the newest release entitled “CODE 6’ and is working with platinum super producer Easy Mo Bee. “Karma” is the first single to be released off the project produced by West Coast own Auditory Beats.
Wicked has also been receiving press from online websites such as CollegeDJ.net, the premiere college DJ record pool and blog. Not only has Wicked's music been accepted on this website, he was interviewed, and discussed his music as well as the state of the industry.
