assault rifle is a rifle of a select fire (able to shoot on semi, or full automatic setting). having a shell of an intermediate caliber (non pistol caliber)
an sks has an intermdiate Caliber, but it is not a select fire weapon, therefore not an assault rifle... just a rifle ---- like any other semi-auto hunting rifle, the wood stock is what gives the gun its "evil look"

by your logic a pellet, paintball, and an airsoft gun are all Assault rifles because you can shoot someone with it.
