Biography: JOI ROCKS
JOI ROCKS writes all her music and does her vocals solely. She produces music too. Joi believes in versatility so she makes effortless switches from rapping to chanting/toasting (dancehall reggae) and singing.
Joi is from ZIMBABWE, and has seen and experienced social, economic and even political hardship currently rampaging through, and crippling many African counties. Though African bred, Joi relocated to America, and has been recording music and performing out here officially since 2002. She started making music 'back home' since she was 15 yrs old as far as performing, writing rhymes, rapping and toasting.
Inspired by her now late parents, she learnt to play the piano from when she was as young as 6, and played the church organ as a teen in Zimbabwe. This artist fell in love with music even before birth! Joi's performances of late include Philadelphia (Club Samba, Club Flow, Club Fluid, Tragos, Club Beyond, Barret Charles, Club Sikira, XO Lounge); Upper Darby (69th Street Lounge)- Delaware (East End Cafe, Rainbow Music/ Book store, Stoneys), New York, (Madison Square Garden), Harlem (Revival Lounge, Black Theater), Brooklyn (Production Lounge), Baltimore (Courtesy of Spitters' Club), and many other "on the spot" open mics. This artist has been extending her influence internationally with shows, and promotion in Canada, South Africa, and Zimbabwe.
Joi also graduated with a Management Information Systems (MIS) degree in and strives to apply even the business knowledge into her music career both in theory and practice. She has single-handedly sold over 10,000 copies of her promo albums "One Mile" and “JOI Rocks” to the streets of Philadelphia, Delaware, New Jersey, New York, Toronto, Johannesburg (South Africa), and Harare (Zimbabwe). Joi registered her own Independent Label, JOI ROCKS ENTERTAINMENT, LLC., as of December of 2008 in order to give her more leverage. Plans of legitimizing her record sales and placing records in more stores are underway as she continues to perform and promote herself both nationally and internationally as a songwriter, artist, and producer. She also anticipates to be picked up by a major.
Influences include Eve, Missy Elliot, Patra, Mary J. Blige, Bob Marley, Peter Tosh, 50 Cent, Sean Paul, Buju Banton, Jay-Z, and Wyclef Jean to name but a few...
