At the age of 11, while most of his peers were learning basic math, DJ X-Rated was learning to master his 1’s and 2’s. His willingness to work hard a profession at such a young age has allowed him to rise to becoming one of the premiere DJ’s in Toronto. He admits never having to look far for influence or encouragement.“I come from a family full of DJ’s. My dad spun reggae and I have a lot of uncles who spin,” he said. “They support me no matter what.” Coming from a background that has always remained supportive has allowed XXX Rated to want to support his background. He spends a lot of his time giving back to the community and is proud to have assisted the March against Violence in Regent Park and raising money for H.I.V victims in Africa.“I believe strongly in what I do and in my community. I like to stay involved with those who support me,” he said. “[After all,] we are all on the same mission.” Currently, at the age of 22, his disposition can only be described with an alliteration of P’s: professional, polite, poised, and pleasant. He remains grounded and while many at his age are concerned with being a club DJ he aspires to leaving his hand as a mark in the business, not just finger-prints. He envisions putting Toronto DJ’s on the map by showing them the power of collaboration. He believes strongly in unity and compilations and feels the need to set the example by creating a label with that being the focus. XXX Rated is looking to expand the urban-music community and feels DJ’s and MC’s in Canada should learn from their U.S counterparts.“You ask a DJ from Brooklyn where he is from and he will tell you New York. But the same question to a DJ in Toronto will get you the ‘hood the represent. “We need to follow [the U.S] example since we want their type of success.” XXX Rated says he feels the partition in the DJ scene while spinning at clubs but does not allow the friction to affect his performance.“I am judged by [my work so] I can’t always be chilling and laughing it up at a club,” he said. “I have to be professional about my occupation. I like to have a good time but have to make sure it does not affect my performance.” With the mind of a veteran he continues to aspire and his ambition is clearly stated on his web-site, www.unitxent.com: Only the best will do. He remains a man on a mission. Be sure to catch DJ XXX-Rated on stage with M.O.P, at the Opera House, on March 7 and Soulja Boy, at the Oshawa GM Centre, on March 22.
