Three words: Planes of Existence http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spiritual_plane
You are actually right some planes of existence are better than some, and do have there advantages based on what you want to accomplish. Like here on the physical plane, you get to make decisions on spiritual growth, direction and path. While on some spiritual planes, vice versa.
When you die (assuming you are human and you will some day), you will overstand all that is said, even if you do not agree now.....peace out blood.

I see what I feel are a few of misguided comments. This is a sad story and we know what ever the "beef" was about, it was bull s***. There is no such thing as R.I.P. (rest in peace) Are we saying that there are some that Rest In Turmoil. And he is not in a better place. He is dead. If you think he is in a better place, then why would you bother to stay hear. Jump of a roof and go to this so called better place. If you are using the bible as a reference? He is dead and will rise on Judgement day, to be judged by God as far as I understand it. It is the blind following of customs and phrases that affect our collective mentality. Maybe if we knew more of the truth we would not act so stupid. If this victim is in a better place? then the guy that killed him did him a favor.
