***I decided to post this Nas song because these are the types of joints I feel should be all over the radio and actually encompass rap skill.
Lol, I know the title is going to excite the b**** niggas enough to come in here and talk s***, so, f*** it, I'ma go ahead and get this s*** out the way. All of MY FAVORITE rappers from 2003 on back are from NY. Pac, Big, Pun, Mobb Deep, Wu Tang, G-Unit, A Tribe Called Quest, Mos Def, Nas, Jay, Dipset, NY was definitely puttin in work. And, NY still doin they thing. But for you niggas thinking Hip-Hop will move on back in the NY direction, think again...............
Hip-hop moved into that southern sound when 50 came out with "Wanksta". 50 is a NY artist, but his music has been more southern than NY from a sound perspective. In NY, a special emphasis is put on story telling, lyrics, and grittiness. In the south, we put the emphasis on the hook, melody, and flow (not lyric wise, just as far as sticking to the beat). And with the way hip-hop is going right now, I think it's pretty clear what people prefer. At least those who buy the records.
Clubbers, women, and youngsters are all into a sound right now. It's not about North vs South. It's a fast paced, up beat sound. And I think the south will always be able to put out music like that, at least, better than NY.
Don't take it as a shot NY. From a hip-hop head's perspective, I say NY's s*** is superior to the south. But, as far as a catchy tune, club banger, dance type of song that everybody of every race and creed will probably be able to enjoy. Bottom line, a lot of NY rappers and people who make "real hip hop" will always be limited to a fan base that's checking for that type of music. For everybody else, they're off "Cranking that Soulja Boy" or meeting Yung Joc at the coffee shop. S***'s just catchy right? I mean, honestly, if you were going to put out a record to make money, would it be.....................................
or
We obviously know which one is better, but, it's not about what we think, it's about what those clubbers, women, and kids think.
KINDA IGNORENT, CAUSE THE SOUTH ISNT 100 PERCEN TUNIFIED EITHER, THEY ARE MORE UNIFIED THEN NY , BUT NOT 100 PERCENT , CAUSE U HAD SHAWTY LO BEEFING WITH T.I OVER HOWS FROM BANKHEAD OR NOT , AND T.I IS A REAL ARTIST
True that. It's plenty of niggas beefing down here. Lo/T.I. was, Luda/T.I., Flip/T.I., lmao, damn T.I., but Trick Daddy and Ross beefin, Gucci and Jeezy, it's a lot of s***.
IDK about the South Running Hip Hop forever, but I will say that NY has to regain the true meaning of Hip Hop back and start to create rhymes with meaning like before. When NY was on top back in the day, it was artist that studied their rhymes and songs, spent time to think about what they were going to say on the Mic. The South had to keep up and that's why you had a few but not majority that could keep up with NY artist. Geto Boys, Scarface, UGK, Outkast, Big Mike, Master P, and some others were able to create songs with meaning and substance.. They were the few in the South that could compete with NY artist like Wu, Rakim, Jay, Nas, Biggie, LL, etc. If you heard a dance song coming out the South it was coming from Luke or them 69 Boyz.. They were the only one's really providing the Sound you hear today.. When the true artist took a break NY and South.. That open the door for anybody to step through and either follow that path or create a New Sound... Since those type of Party songs wasn't coming from up North, It was easier for the South to take over and start the trend and as a result is what we have today. There hasn't been a New Breed of Rappers to Challenge these Candy Shop artist to actual Rhymes and meaning in their songs, so that's why these Record Companies continue to sign these artist because it brings them Money. You can get away with making these type of songs in the South because they started it, but up North you will get no love for it because up North has always been built on actual Rhyming, but their aren't any artist that's trying to step up. Saigon is cool but he's arrogant, Common is to political and Mos-Def and Talib are on the same level.. 50 started off in the right direction with POTD and GRODT bringing lyrics and meaning in his song but than the Record Companies got to him too and now he's on the Side Street..
I feel you folk, but that's my whole point entirely. 90% of the people buying records today aren't really interested in someone's wordplay. They buyin albums either because they a stan of that artist, they heard a good single off of it and wanted to check the album out, or, it's a gift for somebody. Think about the American concious. How many people are going to actually be like, Jada ripped this song with these lyrics, I'ma go get this album. Not many. That's that 10% I'm talking about. You have to think about how many people like hip-hop, but don't really care too much for the lyrics. Like I said about my girl, I'm tellin ya folk, she'll listen to some little catchy s*** in a heartbeat. Irritates the f*** out of me. I always tell her to cut the wack s*** off. But she will go out and purchase an album in a heartbeat as well. So, I'm sitting there saying s*** is wack, but I'm not supporting my opinion by buying no dope s***. So, who's opinion means more. I was talking to Classyle the other week about that s***. How black people's opinions mean more about the quality of content, but how a white person's opinion will attribute to the sales the most. Money talks. There's a reason we're being fed all of this b******* by the radio. And until niggas start buying albums again(which ain't gonna happen), if you jumpin in this business, you better be thinking of doing the "Humpty Dump 2009" or get on some Kid Cuddi/Kanye type s***, or you really ain't gonna have a future. I mean, Papoose is one of the dopest rappers in the game, but he'll forever be a nobody in the mainstream market, which is what pays.
^^^Yeah true but I think real niggas stop buying records cause real niggas stop rapping. I'll listen to a Soulja Boy song on the radio or Kid Cudi Song or even Drake, but that's for the radio and car play, I won't spend my money on them dudes cause at the end of the day when I pick up the Cd 2-3months from then.. I'm going to say to myself why did I waste my money on this B.S.. Today's generation really don't care for lyrics because the sound their hearing is not aimed towards that. If Rappers today were in the same mind frame they were back before 2000, than Hip Hop would be in a better state right now even if the economy is messed up. You right about Papoose which is a sad case cause dude will never be heard outside the internet, but these new niggas that are selling their soul for a Hit, will stay on Radio and 106&park....
Rap music goes in cycles. Right now the media is being forced feed Southern artist. That's cool but when your music sucks it's not a good look. With record companies shutting down because of lack of sells, that's not a good look. Magazines, DVD's closing from lack of sells, that's not a good look. The Ludacris's, Andre 3000's, Scarface and maybe TI keep up the traditions of Hip Hop. To those Southern rappers who are making dumb records just for a check aka the Laffy Taffy's of the world you'll soon see that history will smack them in the face. Most of the Southern uptempo style comes from that recording artists called the Soul Sonic Force's Planet Rock. New York will always stay on top of the game because no son or daughter can teach a subject from the originators. Come with a little bit more respect, we've seen the best have to bow down. Remember when the west coast was tearing everything up. I love the west but when you get a little too arrogant you know the results. Try coming to a Zulu Nation event so you can at least know what your talking about. UGK knows the culture and that's why they will always get respect. Peace
^^^Co-Sign... Right now it's a Get Rich Quick Scheme going on and these Record Companies are to blame but in the end they will loose out because those artist can't build a foundation of music off the s*** their doing right now..
Lol, I don't have to go nowhere to "know what I'm talking about". That's NY arrogance at the best because even though in my post I gave NY props and said most south music sucks, you still feel as though I need to be educated on something. Nah homey. I'm living in reality. And I know just because I like a song or type of music better, that doesn't mean it's going to sell better or that the overall majority of people are going to agree with my opinion. Zulu Nation ain't even makin money homey. Hell, Styles P one of my top 5, but look at his career. In this day and age quality doesn't equal sales. And what I am saying, is it never will again because NY quality ain't quality for everyone outside of NY. NY is the only section that's gonna always put an emphasis on the lyrics and s***. Look at hip-hop in the 90's. NY was runnin s*** right? No corny, bubble-gum s*** right? Black=rap. Now, 2000 and on up, the south, Chicago, everybody in on hip-hop. And look where the album sales are going. You have to put yourself in the shoes of a businessman. Who you gonna put your money on? The white girl who buys the cd's and listens to the corny s*** like S.B., or the black dude who don't buy s*** but can tell you about how Rakim and LL and all of them are goats. From a fan's perspective, I'm listen to the black dude on that quality tip. But if quality ain't makin no money, then wtf am I wasting my time on?
It's not arrogance when your speaking facts. Facts is since the emergence of Southern Rap whose selling what? Ringtones, that's what these performers are in the studio for a ringtone. I see that you have tastes after fully reading some of your opinions but I have to ask you when most Southern rappers that have sampled or looped Planet Rock do you really think that Bam one of the founders of the culture is not getting paid? And since the origin of this music what do you mean quality of work in New York doesn't qualify outside of the Big Apple? Your a very intelligent young man so I have to ask you have you been out of the US? If you have you'll see that overseas is where alot of the quality work is being sold more. That's why you see the tours are more popular overseas than here. Also you must study the powers that be and their goals for our music. If your talking Lollipop or Laffy Taffy when major incidents go down our people act on what they hear. Saturate your stations with these party non-threatning songs and when something major happens watch how our people reacts. Case in point when Fight the Power was a number one song, Black people revolted when major issues happened in the community. Now take when a record like Lollipop is number one and something major happens, Black people stayed home and did absolutely nothing. So when you talk business I can understand your point but nothing is really selling that great. The Forbes list is your best indicator on whose doing what and where. I see it and I don't see too many Rick Ross's or Trina's on that list. What artist of the emergence of the South is breaking the bank. If Little Wayne really sold a million in a week shouldn't he be listed in Forbes Top 10 for entertainers? I'm really feeling your statement about what some white woman are buying but I also know when they want to go to a real show they're definitely at the LL, Rakim, Tribe and others shows. And my brother you never waste your time when your have quality. The most classic albums in Rap can still be played today and get a positive response.
I agree completely folk. The world keeps hip-hop more alive than the U.S. does. But, one things you're failing to see is that all of those rappers you listed from NY that could actually rap and made money are in their late 30's, 40's or even 50's. No, Wayne's money isn't like Diddy's, but based on what's going on, give it a few more years. 50, Diddy, and Jay are the three richest niggas in rap. But, at the same time, most of they money came from ventures outside of rap. I.e., Vitamin Water. My discussion is more about trends than anything. And after all those dudes you mentioned retire, who from NY is really going to bring rap back to what it was? I already know from common sense that one single artist can't do it alone, so, it's going to have to bein a whole movement. All I'm saying is, the next youngest person that picks up a Jadakiss album ain't gonna do it because "Jada ripped it", they're going to pick it up because they liked a beat or a song with a chick on the hook. Name me 1 5 year old child that would prefer Kiss over Soulja Boy. You'll be hard pressed to find many. So, think about what that s*** is going to look like in 15 years or so? Progressively worse. Rap is dying economically wise, and in turn, that's killing the quality as well.
Your right and I'm also referring to the fact with all the SB, Little Wayne so called hits where are they money wise. I respect your opinions their very interesting. Keep up the good work. Yeah we dropped the ball with the younger kids but I guess they will have to find their way.
