Truthfully i aint been big on female rappers like most rap fans but then again there hasn't a very large selection to choose from at the store over the years. But basically post the queen latifah mc lyte era, female rappers attempting to sound masculine has never garnered my interest i suppose that they do it like that because in the streets thats how they learned to rap and i respect that and all. But feminine sounding female rappers has always outpaced their masculine sounding counterparts. Can you really compare left eye, nicki minaj, lauryn hill, missy elliot to foxy brown, remy ma, babs and other female emcees? Lil kim was drowning as a rapper until she decided to dress provactively and talk about suckin a n**** d*** making audio porn, but even she stopped short of giving the full feminine treatment vocal wise.
I had bumped a couple nicki minaj mixtapes before she dropped her album and i had a hard-on part way through hearing her put on that sexy voice and talking to a n****, all that passed through my head is all the things i wanted to do to her.
To be fair, nicki does go into her gay dude voice from time to time but it isn't the mainstay of her rapping and lauryn hill goes into her mc mode but she comes out sounding more soulful than masculine.
But what is also striking is how much more females respond to feminine rappers and honestly for a female artist thats where the money is at, in the female market they even got dudes sounding like b.i.t.c.h.e.s look at the R&B game lord knows i could only get through like two tracks on drakes first album before it hit the recycle bin, R&B aint my thing but it is to a lotta you soft n.i.g.g.a.s lol j/p
Even kreayshawn who may very well be a one hit wonder just sounds like a little girl on her s*** and got everybody bumpin her track.
I guess my point is this, i feel that female rappers that sound like they are feminine has a better shot at making their way into the game, than chicks who don't i feel like you may as well kiss your chance goodbye before you get it.
Girls like girly stuff, take off the panties guys like girly stuff too :) but if sex sells and your voice lower than yung bergs couldn't that be a factor holding you back?
Whats your thoughts on the subject?

Permalink Reply by Ace *Major Pain* on March 13, 2012 at 6:07pm I understand why feamle rappers act masculine. They want to make music that girls can relate to but men can respect. Think of it as crossing over. My personal opinion on female rap, or any rap in general is, if the lyrics make sense and they sound good then im all for it.
