1. Use Command+Shift+3 to capture the whole screen (Make sure you press all the 3 keys simultaneously)
2. Use Command+Shift+4, and then select a portion of the screen to capture a part of the screen (Make sure you press all the 3 keys simultaneously)
BTW the screenshots directly get placed on your desktop.
