This is a serious thread (at least I think) and I am hoping that you will be able to help.

I come from England and I am a 25 year old black male, naturally (though unfortunate but be honest if you are a certain colour and live in a certain part of the world you are going to experience racism, it's almost a part of growing up, again unfortunately) I have experienced racism...

Why is it alright in America for people who are not black to use the word N****/N***** I see people all over America via various different media outlets ie. TV, DVD's, Films, Internet etc, etc say N**** like it is alright.

Let me tell you something, here in England if a non black person says this word whether its with malice or not he going to get his ass whooped, which is 100% JUSTIFAIBLE.

WHY OH WHY IS IT ACCEPTABLE IN AMERICA AND DO YOU NOT FEEL SOME SOUGHT OF WAY WHEN YOU HEAR A NON BLACK PERSON SAY THE WORD N****/N***** LIKE IT'S NOTHING LET ME KNOW YOUR OPINION

St. John 8: 32 “ And ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.”

The truth can be found at www.thecomforter.info
Personally, I veiw the person as either

A) If he/she an NS Skinhead or some other pathetic hope of a "White Resistance Freedom Fighter" He's a racist and needs to get rolled up like a Northern light blunt

B) If he/she is white and thinks he/she black (Afro-Saxon) He's ignorant and needs to be either sterilized or killed so he cannot reproduce or knock down any other people's IQ, further then it already is.

I also think it's stupid when black people call each other it, I mean yeah, you can argue about the roots and s*** of where the word comes from, but in a fight between 2 black people, I hear that word thrown out every other word, and I can guarantee that it's not in a positive manner.

and like with white people it's like "Well black people say it all the time, so why can't I?"

to which I respond "It's stupid. why would you want to take part in something stupid?"
As you said, it is cultural. Terms and actions used in one area will mean, more than likely, something else in another area. It is what is media-ized, publized, and what the "idols" are encouraging. It comes across to me in England blacks and whites are still segregated. (maybe not physically, but definately mentaly.) In America we have had the Civil Rights Movement. Although our grandparents had problems with it, our parents less so, and this generation seems to rarely be seen. In my generation and those younger than me, for the most part, blacks and whites are people. Some still don't agree with the mixing during relations or being married. But other than that, black, white, red, etc., we are just people.

In America n*****/n**** is acceptable. Wrong or not, used appropriately or not, it's acceptable. In our grandparents time n***** was used and was derogatory. In our time n**** is used and it's considered cool. If not with everyone, it is in circles; be it at a club, a party, with our friends, or those we are close to. You will not hear it in businesses of course, but you will elsewhere.

I do not agree with this though. N*****/n**** means the same in retro spect. N**** comes from the word n*****. How can anyone use it knowing that it ultimately has a derogatory meaning? Why would anyone use a word with each other they would not accept/allow others to use? No matter the context, the meaning of a word ultimately does not change. Even if you find it okay with friends, why would you consider someone a friend that ultimately does not respect you? How and when did a deragorty word become a term of endearment? Am I the only person who finds this disturbing?

I understand ebonics changes the word. It does not make it another word, although it is perceived that way. Ebonics, is just that, ebonics: black english. If it is not proper english -and England uses it more properly than us in the USA- it is exactly that, not proper English. I thought in the older days that the blacks didn't use proper English because they were enslaved and not educated. Although it was not just like ebonics as it is today, it was an uneducated dialect of our language. It was unacceptable in the community unless a black was to use it; and we all know how they were viewed. Since today whites and blacks alike are educated why would we want to come across as not? What was the point in intergregation if you want to be segregated? We are all judged, by our words as well as our actions. When we act and speak uneducated we are viewed as uneducated. And in that sense if we are not using what we have learned, we are keeping ourselves in bondage.

In America our rappers, singers, actors, etc. are depicted as uneducated. They don't use our language correctly, they don't clothe themselves fully, etc. Society allows, condones, and actually encourages what we see, do and allow. Back in the day a billboard used incorrect usage of english, it caused such an upheavel that it was removed. Apparently they came back. But my point is, how did we become a society like that to how it is today? Where our children curse as young as 2 and are barely dressed beyond underclothes, our pants are falling off, we swagger instead of walk, we are our own gods, our money is more important than our family, our bodies more important than our minds or souls, I could go on and on. If our society allows, condones, encourage this and more we are beyond accepting it. We will follow suit, and so we have. Parents and friends encourage this and more because, it's acceptable, cool, it's expected or entertaining, or simply we find it cute in our children younger than 7.

So how can you, or anyone for that matter, act the way they do (in your case, use n*****/n****) and not expect others to follow suit? Time and time again, a child -or young adult or older- hears a curse word, you think "why should I not, they already know or use it?" Maybe they do, maybe they don't. But you are allowing, in the least condoning, and are encouraging it when you use that word or any variation of it. If they hear it time and time again, it is viewed as accepted or expected. Especially in America where black and whites are intergrated (or are said to be and wanting to be) how can one use it and not expect it to catch on? Even if it is from another race. If I (or any of us) are you view you as an equal, nothing besides our physical attributes should create a barrier between us. Noone should be able to use a word or an action and not allow or expect another to. If you do not like someone using a term ("yours" or not) you should not use it.

The point I'm trying to drive home is this: no word belongs to anyone. No action belongs to anyone. We as people (and especially the uneducated) immulate all behaviors of those around us. If we are surrounded day in and out of anything, you cannot expect everyone to pick up on and follow it. Being a hypocrite and then hurting others is never justified, 0% justified. If you don't like something, don't do it. People cannot follow what they don't see and hear. Our world, as one and individually, as well as America call for greatness and for growth, yet encourage the exact opposite. You are responsible for your own actions and words. If you do not use what you know, you cannot be great.

And in the grand scheme of things, if any other person white, black or any other color uses a word you use. (At all. Ever.) You have no place to say they can not. Even though this topic is important, if we truly respect each other this wouldn't be an issue. We need to respect ourselves, before we can expect others to respect us. What once was a derogatory word, is now activly used by everyone. Even a variation of the word, has the same meaning no matter how it's used. If you want to see this word disappear (from any one of a different color) everyone needs to stop using it. To gain respect, we must immulate respect. When we respect ourselves, others will respect us.
well australia is the same, you just dont say that word if you are not black, listen im a white woman and My bf is african american and so are his friends if were joking around we will drop dat word and some times in a convo they will drop that word, but neva in a serious way, i know whats its like to be looked at and judged because people think we are differant but at the end of the day we all bleed da same... but the n word no neva is it ok to say it seriously....... if its a joke between a few friends yeah but onli if ur friendz r black/ african american...
I COME FROM A CITY THATS ABOUT 85% BLACK AND LATINO; TO PUT IT PLAIN ITS NOT TO MANY WHITES WHERE IAM FROM. NOW A BLACK PERSON WHO GREW UP AROUND WHITES MIGHT ACCPECT THEM SAYING IT, BUT IF YOU COME TO NEWARK WITH THAT S*** AND YOUR WHITE. COOL OR NOT SOMTHING IS LIKELY TO HAPPEN TO YOU. WHEN I MOVED TO VA IT WAS MORE DIVERSE AS FAR AS BLACKS AND WHITES AND I HAD DUDES THAT WOULD HANG WITH WHITE DUDES AND THEY USED TO BE OK WITH THEM SAYING "N****" AROUND THEM. I STOP F***** WITH THEM BECAUSE I KNOW I WAS GON HAVE TO GO TOE TO TOE WITH THEM WHITE BOYS CAUSE I WASNT USED TO HEARING A WHITE PERSON SAY THAT. I DIDNT HAVE A SINGLE WHITE PERSON IN MY HIGH SCHOOL IN NEWARK. I MOVED TO VA THE BLACK DUDES WAS ALL OVER THE WHITES GIRLS AND WOULD ALLOW THEM TO SAY THAT S*** TO THEM. IAM LOOKING AT THESE DUDES LIKE "YALL WEAK AS HELL FOR THAT" SMH. I JUST THINK IF YOU OK IT YOUR A WEAK M**********. WORD UP!
What makes you weak for not beating someone up for saying a word that many ppl say has been "changed into something positive"? Those fools have double-standards. They say it's now positive, but if a white person says it in a non-offensive way, then it goes back to its old and racist meaning? And blacks use it wen offending each other too, but whites cant even say it in a way that isnt negative? Extremely hypocritical. Many ppl didnt die so their ancestors can call each other a word that they gt called as they were raped or whipped or killed, with the justification that they pronounce the "er" and an "a" and now it's a new word, which still gains attention and controversy.
THIS IS JUST HOW PEOPLE TALK TO EACH OTHER AINT NOTHING WRONG WIT TALKING TO UR PEOPLE LIKE THIS I UNDERSTAND HOW SOME TAKE OFFENCE BUT CMON RELAX IS JUST REALLY PART OF THIS WHOLE HIPHOP CULTURE WICH IS GLOBAL NOW ALL RACES ALL COLORS KEEP IT REAL AINT NOBODY BUSTING NOBODYS ASS IF U HEARD SOME SAY IT OUT THERE BE REAL YALL
I think the rule is if u non-black n yo black friend say u can that s***...then u can say that s*** around them...I beat a white boy ass in his own dorm room 4 sayin that s***...s*** aint cool..dead azz tho
Look I'm white and a rapper... I really don't feel like day wigger s***. Every white rapper that I know personally says the n word for like a term of endearment. It's totally f***** stupid. What black folk say is what black folk say! Look I would understand the frustration. Is b******* dead ass bull s*** not even gonna lie. White people be white people... God racism is still here by ignorant son of a b****** everywhere. Obama can't change that (unfortunately) the only way TO stop it is to f***** think! Black people sayin it... That's hella different l
When someone use these words just by fun, thats disrespektful. You know Im white, so Im talkin about my situation. I have some black homeiz, and few spanish ones too. In my f***** up country the racism is almost on the top, uknomsa? So, when I walk wit my homeboys and we crash with some whiteworm ass nazi motherfuckaz, then those bloodsuckaz hate me too. Of course cuz Im grindin wit other colour men, but... I had to fight so many times cuz Im a friend of black people. Therefore, I feel myself "blacker". I just wanna bark out, that lately the racism on the mentality too uknomsa? "F*** care just hit off someone!" :S B*******!!!! I dont wanna say, that Im in same s*** like you, no. But at least a lil bit I feel that. And I stay in my style, and with my friends, everybody call me anything. I dont giva f***! I be I.
So You're f***** right my man! Real Talk! Wit you... Peace out.
So it is justifiable to hit them? But at the same time you are acting exactly like a n*****, the same word you don't want to be called. You have to be above them and not pay them any attention. You are acting the way they want you to act. I'm pretty sure Martin Luther King wouldn't have wanted for black people to act like wild animals
