I was examining Billboard's top 100 songs of the last decade and I realized when the digital, social media era really kicked in, songs after 2008 had an advantage over songs from the previous years.
The buzz artist had in the first half of the last decade is no joke. It was the era of global smash hits. Neptunes, Timbo, Britney Spares, J Lo, Nelly, Luda, Avril. Come'on.. MTV n BET was popping back then.
But if the criteria was a level playing field. We would get a clearer picture of what and who really, had the most success.
Songs that came out after Itunes and Youtube will seem bigger than a song from 2000 because a song now has more success that you can measure and document. Back in the day you couldn't watch ya favorite joint 150 times on youtube, so you play it on MediaPlayer. Lady Gaga with her 500 million youtube views. Smash hits then don't have that.
So now that Drake got so many number 1 singles. Add Rihanna to that list, to me it doesn't tell the full story. It's like comparing sprinters from then to now. Things have just improved. No lie, no lie, no lieeeEEEeeee..

There is no variety. There aint Luda doing this, Eminem doing that, Snoop doing his thing, Usher causing earth quakes.. etc etc.
Right now, everybody does the same thing. They all do auto tune, they all dress the same, they all got Lex Luther beats.. See wat I'm saying? With that being said. When Drake drops a joint, on the social networks there ain't no variety of reactions to the song. It's: 'WE ALL LIKE IT #YOLO'
EZ and 114 others shared Drake ft Riri - Take Care. That's what you're liable to see.
See this, it's how these songs get these run away success. Even Aftermath tapped into that aspect of the game when they dropped Crack A Bottle.
But I don't think it paints a true picture of what are the best songs being made by our generation.
When you look back to the 70's, 80's, and you look for list of the best songs, you would find good representations of what were the best songs. If somebody wonders what was hot from 2000-2012. They're going to find some wack a** over hyped Drake song that blew up because it was trending on twitter and Itunes charts.
