Some of the top artist will sale between 2 to 2.5Millions records. If you are not Eminem, the chances of you going 4 to 5x platinum is slim.
The average artist has a chance with heavy promotion to sale between 500K to 1M. How much do you think labels have to pay to promote artists like Drake, Lil Wayne, Rick Ross, Nicki? Let's say it is between 1 to 2 million dollars (Think I'm low ballin that number), but lets say. After retail and distributors gets their cut, do you think it profitable for labels when artist sale 500K to 1Mil? Put it this way, Jimmy Iovine and Lyord Cohen expenses are probably way above 2Million a year.
This is the future of the music business. Digital releases with minimal promotions, small staff, and low digital sales, but higher profit margins.
