So it seems that 50 Cent's SMS Audio Headphone and audio company aren't the only ones looking to other music and sound professionals to get on board for producing the best sound experience. If you don't know - Recently 50 Cent brought on Music Heavy-Weight Super Producer Timbaland as an invester and partner in the company for SMS Audio.
Over at Beats By Dre, a company founded by music pioneer and arguably the Greatest Hip Hop Producer of All Time Dr. Dre and Interscope Records CEO Jimmy Iovine, brings Trent Reznor of the Nine In Nails to join the team first as a Consulting role, but now as Chief Creative Officer of Beats by Dre on the newly developing music streaming service "Daisy"
In the late part of 2012 Beats Audio bought M.O.G. (Music On the Go) an online, paid subscription music service, and blog network for a cool 14 million dollars. MOG provided subscibers with up to 16 million tracks of music available on numerous digital devices, such as computers, smart phones, Sonos systems and televisions. The deal was fully announced in July 2012, it did not include MOG's advertising network or MOG Music Network. That part of the company was sold separately to radio broadcasting and media company Townsquare Media in August 2012.
Daisy is in a way the offspring of the union between Beats Audio and M.O.G. The service is expected to be completely rolled out by the end of 2013. Taking on competetion such as Spotify, Rhapsody and other music streaming services. What makes Daisy different than others from what I've got is it will actively search for simular music or suggest music to you it thinks you may like so you don't have to search for the actual music. They want to provide a personal experience with Daisy and a more emotional connection with the music.
This is all after the August 2010 50.1% stake in Beats Audio purchased by HTC a MOBILE PHONE MANUFACTURE for an extremely cool 309 million dollar deal. Later HTC sold 25% of the company's stock back to the founders for 150 million dollars, but remains the largest share holder with 25.1% which was done so Beats Electronis could expand on a global scale while still providing exclusive features and designs for HTC products. The January 2012 announcement that Monster Inc. would not be renewing their production manufacturing contract with Beats Audio. Reports surfaced in March 2012 that Beats and M.O.G. were in the works of a deal. Finally the purchase of M.O.G. was concrete in July 2012.
"What's missing from the digital music landscape is a cultural context," statement made by Beats CEO about the company's role on changing the way people stream music "We need to bring an emotional connection back to the act of music discovery."
When asked about Nine Inch Nails frontman's role
"If you have to search [the service], we've kind of let you down a bit," he said. "The heart of what Trent does is that connection between the artist and the consumer. He's one of the lead artists making sure everything is good from a credibility standpoint. He's very tough in this area and I'm asking him to be twice as tough here. The aesthetic of it will shine a lot with Trent"
"As far as curation is concerned, it's where technology and emotion collide. You have to be able to deal on a mass scale, but you also have to be able to make it personal and sensitive so it feels human. We're going to try our best to deliver people personal solutions to whatever their musical issues are."
Nine Inch Nails frontman On partnering with Beats Audio
"It's probably not what you're expecting."
On project Daisy
"[Daisy] uses mathematics to offer suggestions to the listener"
"[Daisy] would present choices based partly on suggestions made by connoisseurs, making it a platform in which the machine and the human would collide more intimately."
"Here's 16 million licensed pieces of music,' they've said, but you're not stumbling into anything. What's missing is a service that adds a layer of intelligent curation."
"That first wave of music presentation which felt magical, the one where the songs are chosen by algorithms that know who you listened to... has begun to feel synthetic."
"it's like having your own guy when you go into the record store, who knows what you like but can also point you down some paths you wouldn't necessarily have encountered."
Inconclusion it's clear why Beats Audio is the leading line for Celebrity endorsed Headphones, but with all the others poppin out the wood works it'll be interesting to see what happens in the near future with audio equipment and merchandise produced for all of us to give our money away for... What do you think?
DR. DRE IS STILL A SUCKA LOL
What the...now what is this sh*t?!
I just skimmed through the story.
Trent Reznor from Nine Inch Nails huh?
That makes sense. He's pretty much the Dr. Dre of the Industrial Metal scene.
read the whole story my n****... this s*** is crazy what they got in store... the future is gonna be some other s*** imagine SIRI with Rhapsody... but with emotional content (Bruce Lee voice)
Okay, so what's so big about this? I mean it's a good idea, but they are acting like providing suggestions to the user is something new... Video sites and other search sites have been providing this ages ago. Maybe in music it's not so common, but I remember listening to some presentation about this not long ago, that obtains the "mood" of the current song with some formula, I don't remember the specifics.
But when they say sh*t like "We need to bring an emotional connection back to the act of music discovery." (that sounds super homo) and "[Daisy] uses mathematics to offer suggestions to the listener" they are just trying to make it sound like this is something sensational. I mean please tell me one meaningful algorithm that DOES NOT use mathematics. That's like saying they sky is blue or the grass is green most of the time. LOL
Plus algorithms like this are usually really simple and predictable. Suppose that somebody is in a sad mood for whatever reason, and starts listening to some slow sad music (cause he feels blue), then whenever he chooses to come back next he will be offered simiral sh*t to listen to. Even if he's in a better mood now, so eventually he will search for other stuff manually. Anyway, I just hope they are creating something more complex than what I assume they are creating.
