That brazen crime spotlights an alarming problem as gang members have infiltrated the entire region and are responsible for growing violence. Mike Hellgren takes an inside look.
Police say suspected gang members are likely responsible for the shooting that seriously wounded a Baltimore City officer. Although the shooters have not been identified as Crips, the neighborhood is known as a Crip stronghold. 11/16/07-Montgomery County police say they've made several arrests in recent gang-related crimes.
Investigators believe three stabbings and a shooting in the past two weeks are linked to a feud between gang members affiliated with the Bloods and the Crips.
The shooting happened Monday night near the Shady Grove Metro Station, one person was shot in the hand and another in the leg.
Two of the stabbings happened Nov. 5 near Lakeforest Mall. A 19-year-old man was stabbed in the hand, and a few hours later, a 21-year-old man was stabbed to death. Police believe the second attack was retaliation for the first.
An 18-year-old man has been charged with assault in the first stabbing and a 16-year-old from Gaithersburg has been charged as an adult with first-degree murder in the other attack.
Five suspected Crips members or associates, including a 16-year-old girl, have been charged in a nonfatal stabbing Nov. 6 on Goshen Road in the Gaithersburg area.
