"Some say it shows disregard for African-American lives.
A jury Tuesday acquitted the Atlanta policeman of homicide in a botched drug raid that resulted in the shooting death of a 92-year-old Black woman in her home. Arthur Bruce Tesler was spared a possible 20-year prison term, although the jury did convict him of lying in an official investigation to cover up police misconduct in the shooting. He could still be sentenced to up to five years for his role in the cover-up. In 2006, just two days before Thanksgiving, Tesler, 42, and two fellow officers executed a raid on the northwest Atlanta home Kathryn Johnston, 92, after fabricating details to get a no-knock warrant. The two other officers – Gregg Junnier and Jason R. Smith – pleaded guilty to manslaughter and civil rights violations and will be sentenced later. They had been facing possible life for murder but Junnier, is now looking at up to 10, 12 years for Smith. Atlanta lawmaker, Sen. Vincent Fort was outraged when he learned that Tesler, who testified that he fired no shots, had been acquitted of the more serious charge. “He has much blood on his hands, and he is now in custody where he ought to be,” Fort said. “No matter how much time he spends in jail, he will have to live with himself.” Fort was joined by other African Americans in the community who contend that the acquittal is another example of just how little regard society has for a Black life."

Just days after a Black reporter sued the New York Police Department for stopping and frisking him, The New York Post, fired him, Richard Prince reported in his online media column, Journal-isms, citing New York Daily News reporter Bill Hutchinson. On the day that Leonardo Blair’s termination was announced, the Post stood by the Police Department’s policy of Stop and Frisk, which has been highly criticized, particularly in the African-American community. “Leonardo Blair, 28, a freelance crime reporter since May 2007, was let go just days after he slammed the NYPD in a federal suit filed on his behalf by the New York Civil Liberties Union,” Hutchinson said Monday in the News. Howard Rubenstein, a spokesman for the Post, told Journal-isms that Blair was fired from the “The New York Post” because he did not tell the newspaper that he was suing. His actions placed him in a conflict of interest, Rubenstein said. Jennifer Carnig, a spokeswoman for the Civil Liberties Union told Journal-isms, “This is all very new to us as well,” said. “We’re very saddened by this.” Reporters who work for the Rupert Murdock-owned Post are not represented by a union. Murdock axed striking reporters when he bought the newspaper in 1993, according to Journal-isms.Prince reports that, “When the Jamaican-born reporter filed suit May 7, the Civil Liberties Union said: ‘In 2007, the NYPD stopped about 469,000 New Yorkers — almost 1,300 people every day. Eighty-eight percent were completely innocent. Though they make up only a quarter of the City’s population, more than half of those stopped were Black. Another 30 percent were Latino. Though Whites make up more than 35 percent of New York City’s population, they were only 11 percent of those stopped. In 2006 and 2007, Blacks and Latinos were the target of about 90 percent of the nearly one million stop-and-frisk encounters.’

If you’re 18, you can be strapped in S.C. In South Carolina, 18-year-olds can legally possess handguns, the state Supreme Court ruled unanimously on Monday. The ruling is consistent with a new state law which gave a green light to gun peddlers who want to sell to anyone 18 and over. South Carolina’s highest court found that a state ban against 18- 20-year-olds possessing guns violated the state constitution. The high court also threw out the indictment of a 19-year-old who was nailed on charges including murder, assault and battery with intent to kill and possession of a firearm during commission of a violent offense."

It’s Not All Black & White.

While Obama calling a reporter “sweetie” and Clinton’s fight for her fantasy nomination are still making headlines, the state of our nation’s youth has gotten out of control.

At Locke High School in South LA earlier this week, a lunchtime brawl occurred between Blacks and Latinos that involved 600 students! Riot police had to be called in, and the school was locked down. Media outlets are reporting that the fight was gang-related, which it could have been considering LA’s infamous gang reputation.


Locke’s 2600 student population is comprised of 65% Latino and 35% Black students. In a NY times article, one of the students said that Latinos and Black’s segregate themselves from each other from the lunchroom to the classroom. Its interesting to me because racism is always seen as such a Black v. White issue; but lately tensions between African Americans and Hispanic Americans have become more prevalent.

This black v. brown issue is even prevalent in the election. A large majority of Latinos have been voting for Clinton over Barack Obama. It’s really nothing new, Black folks and Latinos have a history of racial tension. It’s even been popularized in movies like Friday After Next. The issue isn’t something that’s reported much because lets face it, to the majority of people in this country (and we all know who the majority is), Blacks and Latinos are the same thing, both brown. I just feel like we’re all fighting for the same right, so be seen and treated as equals in this country! Wouldn’t we be stronger united rather than divided?Whatever division that exists between blacks and Latinos is spilling into the minds and psyche’s of our youth, and you know what I’m going to say. We’ve got to do better.
