For the last ten years it has been a ritual for me to buy the Sunday newspaper before Christmas. It lets me get a look at the item prices before and after Christmas. This comes in handy in case I get any Christmas cash and want to buy something.
As I read the paper, I noticed many articles discussing our newly elected President Barack Obama. One article pointed out various things they would like to see done while Barack is in office. It said that they would like Barack to improve, eliminate, change, and create so many things within his first year. Barack Obama is the President of the United States, not Santa Claus. Where were all these articles when Bush was in office? Anyway, that got me to thinking about my Christmas wish list.
I started visualizing what I want in life. Black beamers, green hummer, 20 acres, some horses, throw in a couple of bottles of champagne to get popping and I'm top billing. Why not? These are some of the images flashed everyday on TV, internet and in magazines. However, we are in a recession, so I doubt Santa is going to drop this stuff off at my house. Then, I think about how I miss taking trips to DC and Atlanta. Getting that mambo sauce from the carryout after the club or how it never seems to rain in Atlanta except for in the club. Money is dry in America, but it rains in the clubs in Atlanta. Go figure up.
I look up at the electric heater because it's kind of cold in my apartment. I see 75 degrees on my electric heater and figure it's just warming up. That brought me back to reality. A year ago I lived in an apartment that used the "old school" radiators. I had to twist the handles to turn the heat on and off. Even in the off position, the radiator would still put out some heat. It used to get so hot in the summer, especially since I lived on the top floor. My apartment didn't have A/C, so I definitely wasn't thinking about popping anything except for bottles of water.
A year before that I was homeless. I could have stayed with family and friends, but my 1987 Ford couldn't make the drive through the tunnel and across the bridge every day. I had to stay in the city because I had a job that I needed to keep. I slept in the car and it wasn't too bad. There were some frustrating nights when I thought to myself, "How did I let this happen?"
I couldn't even leave my radio player on in the car because it drained the drained the battery. I remember hearing some weird noises at night. Even the silence was different. The tinted back windows kept anyone from seeing me in the backseat. It was fairly large, so I wasn't too cramped when I slept.
The good thing was that I joined a gym. I used to work out after going to work, take a shower and iron my clothes for the next day. I got to work early, so I could brush my teeth and wash my face before anyone got there. I made this sacrifice for a couple of months because I couldn't afford an apartment. 6 months later, I was ready to get my new apartment.
I thought about my successes I made in the last couple of years such as going from homeless to an apartment without central air to an apartment with A/C and an electric heater. I believe that I am blessed to receive anything I put effort into. For this Christmas, I'm asking to keep the good things that I have like a roof over my head, food in the refrigerator, family/friends and my electric heater. Anything more would be a bonus.
