The lost tape one of the best 50 cent projects in years, my review
Background.
I found the big 10 to be dated sounding and boring, nothing exciting at all. I finished listening to that mixtape knowing i would probably never hit play on it again. I think one of the reasons people say "whats new and exciting" to people want from time to time to hear something new for it to be exciting 50 has been consistent in attempting to do the old but never seemed to grasp aspects of the old and apply it with the new which he sort of did on this tape.
There was a time i did want the old 50 back, scratch that needed the old 50 back, but being hit over the head with disappointment after disappointment forcing me to look elsewhere for my musical fix as time went on my tastes changed. I can and still appreciate well executed older sounding "gangsta rap" but i no longer crave it.
There was more variety on this, we got some "southern sounds" on it but in all honesty at this point calling some of the most popular sounds in hiphop for over a half a decade "southern" is like being in atlanta in 1993 and calling n.y rap a "northern sounding" its just idiotic, the sound is ubiquitous throughout the genre and is a integral part of hiphop today.
That being said Dirty South fif > R&B fif.

Anyway enough chatter on to the review
Track 1. Get busy
Sounded Ok on the first listen, but definitely a skip track. Gudda Gudda...ahem Kidd Kidd, (sorry Gudda) look now i haven't heard this guy before so this was his debut for me and honestly it was like watching a excited teenage boy running to ask the girl of his dreams to the prom only to trip over his own laces and land face first in pile of dog s*** right in front of her, it was like a incoherent drunken homeless man asking for loose change. This was not rap, Gucci mane has written better raps in bathroom stalls with his boogers not to mention the production sounded like something from Dr. Dre's "i would throw this garbage in the recycle bin but 50 might want it" catalog. I don't concern myself too much with lyricism if the music sounds good, but this was distracting, its like a blind date with a thick chick, oh sure you don't mind a little meat on the bones, but when jabba the hut shows up with her stomach down to her ankles in a wheelchair because she is too fat to walk, you realize as horny as you are every man has to draw the line somewhere.

Track 2.
Double up, definitely some dope s***, at first i thought this was dated sounding but the truth is that is just a undeserved label based on my past 50 cent listening experience, because if rick ross was on this beat i wouldn't think that, honestly its one of those instances that constantly plague 50/g-unit fans when you wished 50 didn't have any problems with any rappers, because honestly this is the kind of beat ross flows sick on and a ross and fif collabo on this joint would have been perfect, hell jeezy would've been dope on this too.
Track 3.
Murder one ft eminem, starts off with the lyrics "murder dem - murder dem" a 23 year old reference to a hit song by Dancehall Artiste Ninjaman and lists Eminem as a feature yet he is no where to be found, hmm... musta called in sick. Anyway this song was a throwaway anyway. a Eminem verse wouldn't have been able to save this track. It would have been an injustice for Eminem to feature on this boring track and delay its departure into obscurity where it deserves to be, this track is like putting a terminally ill rabid dog to be euthanized up for adoption, no good can come from it and no good has.
Track 4.
Riot remix ft 2 chainz:never heard the original riot but this track is some summertime banger in your car music. This is dope.
Track 5.
OJ: This s*** dope too, 50's hook game on point oj doing his oj thang and Kidd Kidd redeems his self on this one, makes me wonder if kidd kidd is a hit or miss type rapper.
Track 6.
I aint gon lie:I have to admit to not being huge on R&B and less enthusiastic about "R&B fif" i do grudgingly have to admit this track isn't bad but it isn't great either in my opinion, dude singing the hook is extremely talented though and definitely has a future under the right guidance. (never heard of dude before so if he actually has a career already, strike my last comment)
Track 7.
Complicated: Dope! shows a little more versatility in sound that we havent heard from him in a while, his line about jimmy henchman and watching a rat, rat on a rat was some funny s***.
Track 8.
You a killer: Meh
Track 9.
Remain Calm: Sounds like something from a Classic G-unit radio mixtape the production is sort of dated but i don't really mind it. The hook is something you either love or hate, precious paris is aight on this except for that part where she is like na na na na otherwise she was a good contribution.
Track 10.
I cant help myself:
Classic fif! sounds like a cut from the Grodt movie soundtrack or a great track to end massacre.
Track 11.
When i pop the trunk:
Sounds like some massacre s*** to me, kidd kidd is alright on this, i like it.
Track 12.
Planet 50: has a sort of west coast vibe but there is too much going on on the production all sort of extra sounds that don't need to be there that distract from the track, simplicity would have helped on this production, because of that the track is average at best.
Track 13.
Swag level:
Don't like the sound of this, its just one of those tracks you listen to for a few seconds and hit skip. There are too many things wrong with the song to worth critiquing it its just wack.
Track 14:
Lay down(smoked)
This song has this blues type sound that has soul and just makes you wanna hit the repeat button. The line about his momma crack spot birth rights, will go down as a classic, this track is classic. Fif fans will keep coming back to this joint.
Track 15:
All his love:
Average track, the beat is alright but it sounds something ive heard before, it sounds like something that should be good to end a album/mixtape but all the lack of creativity on this makes it unremarkable.
Overall this is the best project from fif ive heard in years, its more up with the times and has much more replay value than his last album. I never felt good about having to be negative about fif for so long, this makes me feel like a fan again. Im not quite back in the fold but this is definitely a good start.
Also id like to note that unlike a lot of folks on thisis50 i haven't heard any of this music before my first listen, i do think hearing half the mixtape before it comes out affects a person's opinion on it and also takes away from the fact that the order that tracks are listened too on a project is important to its enjoyment.

I think with fif being the "numbers" guy he has to put out a project that will be very respected despite the numbers because i just can't see him beating his last album numbers. 50 has been on a decline for a number of years now and i think some more high profile collabs would be good but they also have to be good and popular. If the track aint right it has to go on the shelf and never see the light of day. If i were jimmy iovine i probably wouldn't put fif album out in stores just yet. But if fif can put out some good music especially how there is such a drought out there he may see a resurgence in his career that reaches unexpected levels. Fif is talented and if he can get in touch with what people like he may surprise himself with the success he can get.
The drought is the wildcard right now, if there were more artists putting out more good music he wouldn't have a opportunity to re-emerge but the game is wide open, its a big p**** waiting to get f*****, but fif has to learn how to sweet talk her first, right now he just tryna get her number.

Artists putting out "good music" is subjective. There will always be those selling at the top and those at the bottom. Whether that reflects what is "good" in individual people's opinions is not in any way related. We got about 20 people on here who always say finally we got some good music with Saigon album but that doesn't mean it sold. This lack of "good music" creating such a hole that is there for the taking by 50 if he drops good music is simply not true. We got people saying slaughterhouse last album finally brought hip hop back to a good place yet it didn't sell. 50 doesn't need to release something that is "good" to be back on top because what is "good" may be different to different people on here. ZV said I'm on it was good. I said when I come back was good. I'm sure you feel certain songs are good. It's irrelevant. To claim a spot at the top the music can't just be amazing to 50 bloggers (like Saigon) it has to connect beyond that.

"Good" point however the context i was using the word "good" in, was one that had enough perceived quality amongst a large proportion of consumers that it would sell well. Indeed at this point in order for a 50 cent album to do good in sales in 2012 he cannot depend on any momentum he had previously in his career to propel him to great sales. Potential consumers must find the music to be "good" in their opinion before purchase. Now that i have outlined the context of my thinking id like to o refer back to my analogy about the game being "a big p**** waiting to get f***** yet 50 is still trying to get her number" against your slaughterhouse and saigon examples. First i would argue that alot of the folks that we see regularly on hiphop blogs that usually colloquially referred to as "hiphop heads" are a vocal minority, the fact that the fanbase of these artists you mentioned are small and the fact that the sales and support of these artists are also small as a percentage of sales in their genre have been consistently at low levels over the last decade regardless of the economic conditions of the music industry. Even with saigon having a role on HBO's Entourage tv show for a season, the same show that if memory serves launched soulja boys career and joe buddens twitter presence. The popular and now defunct joe budden tv. In the context of my analogy slaughterhouse is still trying to get her number, saigon is still trying to get her number, joe budden dated her for a week 10 plus years ago but now she wont give him the time of day.
I do not believe i drew a direct line between 50 making "good" music and him becoming popular again. I outlined that the conditions in the game were favorable that if he was able to achieve making good music in the way i just articulated in this comment then yes the possibility does exist. Just like the possibility of a single girl having sex with one of her ex-boyfriends exists.
I do not hold the belief that it is a likelyhood at this point that this will happen but to expand on my last analogy, its hard to judge the feelings of the single girl overall toward this particular ex-boyfriend but she may still have feelings for him, even if she felt wronged by him in the past. Which makes it not unreasonable to theorize that he may have an better opportunity than his rivals to hook up with her.Part and parcel of this possibility is his ability to atone for wrongs done to her in the past and show that he is someone she would like to be with both very difficult things to overcome but can be done if he can charm her off her feet.
